Well... maybe not quite yet, it's on the way.

A while back I contacted Stephen with a bit of a weird request for an over-sized and axish hawk. Stephen and I corresponded back and forth a bit as he clarified my poorly explainified idea. With the idea thus communicated Stephen said, it'll cost $150 to your door, and you're going to have to wait (It seems a bunch of crazies from who knows where had flooded him with Hawket requests.)

It seems Stephen was a bit misleading about having this wait for my hawk. I figured it'd be August before I heard back even if he wasn't busy. Given that he was, I thought late August, maybe September for him to catch up. Instead he emailed me yesterday with these...

This first image was sent with a request that I approve the design before it was cleaned up. I approved and a few hours later...

Handle shaping and hardening was scheduled for today...

I can't wait to get a hold of it. It's a bit different than I had envisioned in my mind. It's the CCF interpretation of my idea. But I think that's what you go to a custom worker for, not just a carbon copy of a thought stamped out in metal, that's what a manufacturer is for. Instead it's like requesting a painting from Van Gogh. What you will get, is a painting of the subject in the Van Gogh style. Stephen has rendered the concept beautifully.

EDIT: A quick note, credit where credit is due. These pictures (the hawk is in the mail) are Stephen's he's given me permission to post them up.

God Bless,
Adam

PS: A note on working with Stephen through this process. He has consistently been up front about things. He sought clarification on any obscure matters seeking to ensure the piece would be what I desired. He was prompt to respond to all requests. He has never overstated his ability. Due to his modest assessments (which I think a good practice) he has over delivered. The piece, as you can tell in the pictures is of the first quality, the work of an artisan. As mentioned above when the work had been "roughed out" for lack of a better term, Stephen sent an email with photos for "proofing." That is before the piece was to be finished he wanted to be sure it was approved by me. I never expected such a thing. I thought it'd simply show up at my door, and I'd hope it'd be what I wanted (not that what I've seen of Stephens skills had left me in doubt.) If you have an idea for a hawk and are looking for someone to help you get your thoughts into your hands I cannot recommend Stephen highly enough. He will work with you honestly, up-front, and work hard to see it done right.

SWEET!
I, too have an order pending with Steven -- waiting for the heat to break so he can put in more forge time! :D

Amflud,
I'm wanting this hawk for chopping and wood processing. I hope that you're right, and given Stephens experience with making hawks, I think it's going to fit the bill very well.

1066vik,
With Stephen you're in good hands. I really cannot recommend him enough. I wouldn't hesitate a moment to extend my future business to him. Yeah he's reported that the humidity is really killer right now. Can't imagine a humid summer over a forge!

God bless,
Adam

Thanks for the customers-eye-view of the process.
Reputation and word-of-mouth must be pretty important to artisans doing custom work.

Congrats man
Thanks for showing us the piece
Steve does really great work , cant wait to get mine

mct,

I can understand why you're a fan of Stephen and his work. Superb to deal with and yeah the work looks great. I'll find out what the work is like in person tomorrow... around 11:00 Lord willing. I expect I'll be giving him more business. I'm pondering a double bit pattern forged.

God bless,
Adam

A quick shot of my Coal Creek Forge Hawk (Just got in a little while ago) and it's companion (BHK Boat Tail Scandi.) Going to work on the edge a little bit and see what kinda woodsy magic this hawk can work. After I've tried out the design a while I'll let ya'll know how its working out. What I'd asked Stephen for is a 1.75lb head, an abbreviated and hardened pole, and a bit more for chopping wood than for throwing. I think he has delivered quite well. Oh, and it's purdy too! Many thanks to Stephen it has just been superb to work with (really he did all the work, I just threw a request at him.)

God bless,
Adam

I am very interested to find out how that works for processing wood. Perhaps your version of processing wood and mine are different, so it would be interesting to see how it works for you, what you did, how long, etc. Please let us know. Looks like a good piece.

Operator,

I'll let you know how it works out. It's most certainly an experiment on my part. As I have time I'll work it for chopping, splitting and shaping. We shall see what can be done. I fear my limitations will be spoken for more than those of the tool. None the less, a concept of its capabilities should be formed.

Hope it works to your liking. Sometimes I get a little perplexed when I look at something like that and think it will be used for chopping or splitting, but then again I am used to using a monster maul, an 8lb maul, or 3 lb axe to do splitting and wood work overall. So a piece like this is "foreign" to me for processing wood, but alas there are more than just my way. So it will be interesting to see how you think it worked out. I would like to know. Hope it does great. Then I might have to venture down that path. I dont want to though, I can't get into hawks and axes - I will really be broke then.

Operator,

Most of what I've done also involves a 8lb maul, 4lb double bit, and splitting wedges. But for a packable tool, all three of those are out for me. That is where this will come in. It' won't be busting giant logs, just wood for small fires and such. Hopefully that will take away some of the perplexation.

God bless,
Adam
