Coarse Grit Sharpening

I was finally able, after about 3 tries and a little cursing, to get an edge that would whittle beard hair (I know its thicker, but its the best I can do now) off a 200 grit green water stone. The knife is an old Scout Lite that I reground to thin the edge. It uses Buck's older 425 Modified steel. Shaves hair off my arm and whittles coarse hair, just barely. I took it all the way to 0.3 micron honing film after testing the coarse edge, so if I want to do it again, I have to start over. Next is hair shaving with a filed edge. Dont wait for a post, this may take a while.

You can do it, use a second cut or smooth file and it will shave with some work. I've never handled a dead smooth file, but those are apparently so fine that they don't get used anymore.

Thanks. Any advice on where to get the smoother files? The local hardware and HD and Lowes only have double and single cut bastard. Its rasp, bastard, second cut, and smooth, in increasing fineness, right?

OK, after about 2 years, it seems I'm finally getting the hang of these waterstones. I can get a hair whittling edge after the 1000x side of the King 220/1000 grit stone. When I first bought it, the 1000x side wouldnt even do as well as a Norton Fine India. I'm not sure whats going on, but if I follow the same steps, I get the same shaving sharp edge. I know 1000x is considered an intermediate grit, but for kitchen knives, it seems a good place to stop.
