I've been given the task to sharpen a scissor meant for cutting hair. Having never cut head hair I don't know what kind of edge is best.

Does it require a fine or a coarse edge? I'm guessing that a mirror polished fine edge would be best.

The steel is 420c.

Ooo I would do as fine as possible. A nice smooth polish so it doesn't grab n drag. I sharpen household scissors to 400 grit and fabric scissors to 600 grit. Have you sharpened salon shears before? They are very difficult to sharpen especially if the edge is damaged. That curve in the blade makes them a major pita.

Yea salon shears are harder to sharpen than a knife is, and you can muff em up fairly easy.

People who professionally sharpen em get certified first.

Shears are very hard to sharpen. I use very fine stones on the flats, and loaded strops on the bevels. Works, but it ain't easy.

The finest grit you can get ahold of, when I first started sharpening my wifes grooming shears I was amazed at how sensitive they are to the slightest nick or imperfection on the edge, I final them with 1500 grit paper. The bevels are different between grooming and saloon shears as well, use a flat stone on saloon shears and you can ruin them in just a few strokes.
