My son serves as a boarding team member and search and rescue for the U.S.C.G.

I'm looking to get him a Spyderco Enuff in H1. In that model there is black and yellow frn handles. All of the black frn are VG-10 and the yellow frn are H1. Is there a black handled model in the H1 steel?

If not, can I buy one in VG-10 and one in H1 and just switch the scales? Are the blades and holes identical on both versions of the knife?

I could just by the yellow version in H1 and make some custom G10 black scales but I'm not sure I have time to do all that.

I appreciate any advice here.

Thanks BF.

All I can do for you is suggest that you ask this on the Spyderco factory forum as well as here. One or the other should get you a pretty quick answer. I suspect that both models use the same pattern for the blades, but I don't know that.

Vg-10 is stainless steel too. I don't think it's imperative to have H1.

I've read quite a biy on the comparison of the two and the VG-10, while stainless, is not recommended for substantial salt water contact. Being a rescue guy with the C.G. my son spends lots of time IN the water and H1 will definitely be the way to go for maintenance free use. Also, the serrated versions (what I will get for cutting cord and rope - possibly in rescue scenarios) are said to have an RC at 68 on the edge and stay sharp for a long time.

I'm settled on the Spyderco Enuff sheepsfoot serrated blade. He cannot wear the yellow on his duty uniform but can wear black.

Now I need to know if the black handles on the VG-10 model will fit the yellow H1 model?

Never done so myself but I have heard of guys using rit dye on the frn handles. You could buy the h1 model and dye the handle black.

Guest516 - YOU'RE A FRICKIN' GENIUS!!!!

I've dyed a half dozen frn scales already myself using RIT dye and the boiling method. Black of course is the easiest of them all. I was out at the deer lease all day erecting deer blinds in the blasting sun (it was 104* today) and I guess my brain is fried.
My new Spydrco Mule in Elmax got a little workout today too. LOL
Embarrassed I didn't think of it myself. Now here's the kicker. I just bought both models!!! One in black with VG-10 and the yellow H1!! I'm such a tard, but hey, it was for my son and he's serving and I'm as proud as a papa could be so what the hell right? LMAO at MYSELF!!!

Thanks everyone.
