What do you guys prefer, coated or non-coated blades? And why? Any coatings in particular that are good or bad?

I have some coated blades, all of them carbon steel. I wish they had come without the coating, but too many noobs can't stand the sight of cosmetic rust blooms or chaotic patina.

I prefer non coated as they look cleaner when you use them. Coated ones look beat up over time..But black wash blades look awesome.

Some coated, some un coated. Some knives look better with it, some don't. Like, say, the Paramilitary 2. IMO that knife looks amazing un coated. Then you have knives like the Kershaw JYD or the ZT 0200. To me, those knives don't look good uncoated. They look great coated, though.

It really depends on the knife.

I don't mind coating on my fixed blades with steels that are prone to rust like 1095, 1075, etc.

I can't stand it on folders that aren't prone to rust...just don't see the point of it. I have 8cr13mov, aus8, S30V, S35VN, D2, M4 and probably one or two others and they're all satin finish. Only the M4 is showing minor signs of patina ( GB ) but I kinda like it.

Usually I prefer satin or stonewash when i can get it. However a properly executed tiger-striped blade or a polished DLC takes precedence.
Unless the blade is a non-stainless, i dont need blade coatings. I just prefer the aesthetics of polished DLC, tiger-striped, and satin/stonewash blades to that of just a black coating.
