The custom shop told me they cant do a satin job with a cooated blade, I thought I had seen BAN do a couple? I'd like to know if it can be done, and I havent seen BAN on in a while, HELP!
thanks

I'm not sure if you'd call it satin but I stripped, polished and convexed the blade of a game warden and it came out very nicely it just took a lot of work. That Infi is rough once the coating is gone and it takes a lot to get it smooth.

It's a very long tough job to do it by hand with sandpaper.

It's not bad with the right tools, but you need to know what you're doing so that you don't screw up a great knife. You may want to just wait until Ban can get to it...

On the other hand, yo can strip the coating off very easily, and just have a very "rough" satin finish...

Which model are you wanting to do? It it's a full flat grind, it makes things much easier...

(1) Strip it
(2) Use scotch-brite to give it a decent satin finish. (The drill attachment, at low speed, works best.

(1) Send it to Ban ;)

Ban's satin jobs make great users.

Ban has been busy painting his house and he's waiting a while after his laser eye surgery to get back to grinding.

I've done a few and found the same as the guys above for the newer Busse's.

On the other hand, some of the older ones have been extremely rough and uneven under the coating. Definitely not feasible by hand and requiring what amounts to a regrind to be presentable. A Mr. Mojo EU was the most difficult and needed the kind of work I've seen done by Tom Krein.

Can anyone who knows point me in the direction of which drill attachment and what Scotch-Brite product works well to do this Satinizing thing to INFI? Are they things my local hardware store might carry, or do I need to order online?
