coated vs uncoated

Hey guys I'm getting ready to pull the trigger on a 943 and wasn't sure whether to get a coated blade or not. What are you guys experience with bms coating? Does it provide any corrosion resistance over the satin finish? Any thoughts would be helpful. Thanks

I much prefer a plain edge satin un-coated finish. Coating most modern stainless steel, even D2 is just for appearance, and which shows scuffing and scratches readily. Only blades requiring coating/protection are those in tool steel, such as M2 and M4 (similarly for 1095, which Benchmade uses from time to time.)

Well, I am 50/50, sometimes 51/49 and sometimes 49/51!!

I think they both have their pros and cons.. lately I have carried a m4 mini Ritter.. I like the looks of the black blades on certain scales.. and I definitely like when the coating starts to wear, and the knife gets that "well loved" look..

BUT!!, I also like the m390 mini Ritter with the stonewash that does a great job at hiding usage..

So as you can theorize through my rambling, I think both are great!

***TO the OP, coating does provide corrosion resistance to the blade. But not all steels need the protection.. so it all depends on your steel.. the 943 comes in s30v which has great corrosion resistance. So basically the choice comes down to what you think looks better on that particular knife.. my opinion on the 943,, I like the all black setup with only the blue spacer!! Great knife, hope you enjoy it..

Prefer Uncoated. Even though Benchmades coating does last longer then other companies coatings for me, it still starts to come of fairly soon making it look like crap. Also if using to cut food will come off in it. I can't think of a knife I'd want protective coating on. Even with steels that arent very corrosive/stain resistant.

I generally prefer plain...but sometimes I wish I got coated on my 943 & 530 just for the reason it is less flashy. I work in an office. That would be my only reason for a coating on 154CM.

If having a knife in your office would draw unwanted attention it wouldn't matter if the blade was coated or not. The 530, though, is a good choice. Most wouldn't take it seriously. Unless they do. When I was working in an office I made a point of not letting anyone know by not sharing it's presence. Funny thing is: using a box cutter was never a problem, they weren't considered dangerous, even if they were. Anyway, we do have to be cautious these days with 'Sheeple' around us. Times have changed.
