Coating Face-Off

i'm not crazy about any of them myself. of the ones listed i suppose the DLC is the best. most if not all of them do a decent enough job protecting the steel but all of them scuff/scratch way to easy for me (including the DLC), i know most still protect the steel even when scuffed, but they look like hell imho, unless i needed a black blade for some reason, or was in/around salt water a lot i would skip the coatings, myself.

satin looks better anyway lol.

I really like the TiNi on my M16. That stuff is great looking (really dark shine) and it's ridiculously tough. I've never scratched mine.

My least favorite is Benchmade BK1, like on my D2 minigrip. It's ugly and matte black, but worse yet, it scratches under even light cutting, like through cardboard. Starts to look really bad really quickly.

I really like whatever's on my para's pocket clip. My pocket clips hardly make it through a week without looking like they survived WWII, but this one has made it maybe four months with no scratches.

the coating on the clip of my manix is slowly coming off near the tip of the clip, i can care less but does anyone know if spyderco uses the same coating for most of their black clips? maybe this is a question for sal?

But to stay on topic, i dont have a favorite coating. I used to only get knives with black blades because i prefered the way they look but i dont like how they get all scuffed up.

The coating used on the Timberline specwar was supposed to have a high hardness rating similar to Chrome. It is pretty tough stuff.

The Black Crinkle Coat on Busse and SRKW knives is some really tough stuff. I wish it wasn't so tough, because I really hate coatings and it is a big pain to remove unlike some other coatings.

Considering how widely used they are, you'd think someone would do a test comparison or make a chart of the various coatings' properties.

I've looked them up (when available) and in general all that is listed is purpose, maybe hardness, and other small stuff.
