Hi, I have a habit of picking up a lightly used or neglected knife and "restoring" it. For refinishing the blade I sometimes choose to beadblast anything over 6". I notice a couple of makers are using some type of coating on the blades when they beadblast. What is that coating? Any info would be greatly appreciated.

alot of the knives your are seeing bead blasted and coated are high carbon steel
blades, they are putting the coating on it
to protect it from rust.
coating will not work on stainless
steels,if the blades are carbon after bead blasting a good coating that will turn
a nice matt black is called Toolblack
you can get it from MSC or Travers
if you need any more info feel free to email me.

There is a company in this neck of the woods (southern Ontario) that is called Norcoat that will apply a powder coat on just about any surface from 5 microns thick and up. Primarily an automotive and machine finish it will work quite nicely on blades with the proper preparation and is very durable.

Check your local auto body shops for referal info, they may be able to help. I've rebuilt some HKMP5's and 33A3's with this process as well as some ATS34 blades and the results were very impressive.

All the Best
