I bought a Gerber clip lock knife, very inexpensive. I wanted to put a new finish on it but bluing didn't work so it must be stainless steel. Its original color is grey-black. Any suggestions on a sturdy coating?

Thanks.

P.S. Ordered an Edge Pro. It seems like the way to go. You guys are costing me a lot of money!! Appreciate all of the info.

Well I don't know how it would turn out on stainless, although with the use of the etching chemical I'm sure it would turn out good. I used POR-15 to coat and protect an old rusted up machete I found in the garage years ago. Can't say I've truely put it through its paces, but I did use it a good amount this past summer to gather and split kindling as well as to play with. Has held up extremely well with the only wear being on the actual edge bevel. Very curious as to how it holds on in the long run.

Hi, Buck-

Thanks for your reply. Any idea where I can buy that product? I was looking for a matte or flat finish if thats what you get.

Rather than paint, you might do better with a black oxide coating. These folks sell a kit that will treat stainless.

I've not used it. But if I were going to blacken a blade, this is what I would try. The result should be somewhat more robust than a painted blade. Not sure if a Gerber is worth the cost though. You might consider just buying a new knife with a black blade.

Hi, Knarfeng-

That product would do it but you're right-the cost is most of the way to a new knife. The other clip locks I've seen were polished stainless. This one was different.

Every so often I see an old Mk. I or II with a black finish but not too attractive
in my opinion. My Guardian has that too and it scratches easy.

Thanks for replies.
