Coating on Brass

Received my new Vanguard today. There seems to be a protective coating on the brass. Its darker than brass. Does it wash off or how do you get it off?

Can you post pics? I've not seen or gotten a Vanguard or any other Buck that I can recall with a "protective coating" that I can recall other than maybe oil. Depending on the date it was made it might just be a bit of tarnish.

It is the color of oil. I can rub it off a little with a wet finger. I'd need at least a day for a pic

I soaked a rag with vinegar. It wiped right off. Vinegar is an ingredient in home made brass polish.

The brass on Vanguards polish up quite nicely.....
