I have a SH II E that I would like to take the coating off of. Anyone have any suggestions on how to do this without messing it up ? Thanks

Tony P

I've done it on an old A2 SH and recently on a Becker Campanion. The easiest way I found is using a .5" wide wood chisel and fine Sandflex from http://www.sandflex.com/

Put the SH blade on a sturdy flat surface like a kitchen board and start scraping the coating off with the chisel ALWAYS AWAY FROM YOUR LEFT HAND! (if you're right handed). Try to get as much coating off with the chisel before using Sandflex. It took me about 30 min for the Campanion

I think the best direction to take the coating off is from the spine to the edge. I believe that is the way the blade is ground. Stands to reason that the coating probably lays in those tiny grooves and would come off easier that way. I just used sand paper to take my coating off. I wish Busse Combat would give the money back I spent on sand paper. That coating is tough as nails. LOL.

Do you think that a coarse wire wheel on a bench grinder would work.? I really appreciate your ideas , but it sure sounds like a lot of work to me.

Ryu , I haven't forgotten your sheath. I'll get it to you soon.

I plan on removing the coating on my NO by using the hell out of it until it wears off.

The stuff is tougher than I thought it'd be. The wrinkles are smoothing out of the finish but the smoothed out finish still seems plenty thick.

I think its going to be a while before it's all gone.

I would advice against using any coarse/hard abrasives (especially when power driven) for coating removal. It's too easy to scratch the blade which would lead to a much more labor intensive repolishing process. IMHO the epoxy type coatings are better scraped off with a softer steel blade.

Hey, man, it's a Busse. Use and abuse the INFI sucker until you WEAR the finish off!

Tony,

Sometimes Busse Owners will send a knife back to the shop to have the coating removed or to have it re-coated.

To remove the coating we bead blast until the coating comes off.

You can send your knife to the shop to have this done. The cost is $30 plus $6.95 S/H to return it to you.

Sincerely,

PS Heather and I and ? thank you for the gift.

Ralf,
Don't quote me me one this but... I don;t think the busse coating is epoxy. I think it is a type of ceramic. Could be wrong though.

Ryu, I'm not an expert on the new crackle finish coating, but so far it was an epoxy base with harder (ceramic?) particles mixed into. The coating is rather soft and not like a glazed ceramic tile surface which the term "ceramic coated" might indicate.

I wish to thank everyone for their suggestions. I sent my SH II to a custom maker who is removing the coating and putting ivory handles and mokume bolsters on it. I'll post a pic when it's finished.
