Coating under the coating? CGNMFBM

Alright, here's something funny. I was out on a day hike today, and used my NMFBM for various work. The NMFBM was fantastic, which I'm sure all you guys already know. But, as I was using the butt of the knife to hammer a wooden peg into the ground, a small piece of coating flaked off. Now, that's something that I see with most coated blades at one time or the other, and that's nothing interesting. The funny thing is, under the crinkly black coating that had flaked off from a small area on the butt of the knife, there seemed to be another layer of coating, very smooth and black as oil. It doesn't feel like bare metal - it feels warmer and softer to the touch like some coatings. Anyone seen stuff like that before? I figure it could be just really black INFI, but my guess is that it's some kind of a weird smooth "undercoating" which I haven't seen before. I would have taken photos, but my crappy camera couldn't take a good shot of such a small area.

Now, I have a theory. :p It seems the coating on the NMFBM is, well, stronger than the coatings on my older Busses. I wonder if Busse has changed something about the way they do coatings, and if they're now using a secondary coating of some kind under that crinkly stuff.

All right, I'm off to drink, I'm not making any sense here. :D Cheers, ye hogs and piglets!

Someone mentioned that the stripper that they always use didn't have much impact on the new tan coatings.

May be it's the decarb. under the coating :

Yeah, perhaps it could be decarb. But it looks pretty darn black, blacker even than the decarb I've seen in pics around here.

I saw in a post where someone was using the NMFBM and some of the coating had wore in the sweet spot and he said it looked like there was a black coating underneath also. Maybe something new they are doing.

It's carbon from the depths of Hell. Jerry sold his soul to have them puppies made. How else can you "melt" the edges and not bother the heat treat?

OK, maybe not.

I have stripped my GCNMFBM (pics eventually ) and found a very dark grey color to the nekkid INFI, different than the SAR5 I did. After buffing with a Scotchbrite wheel it looked kinda cool.

No, that must be it! :D Perhaps this stuff is like H-INFI. As in Hell-INFI.

Resinguy, it'll be cool to see some pics when you get them ready. :D I think I've only seen Ban's NMFBM strip job, and he went and satin'd the whole knife I think.

i know exactly what your talking about and i think i'm the one dobywon may be referring to.

these pics suck.underneath the coating in these pics looks gray but its really much darker, its really black.i'm looking forward to wearing the coating down even more through use and getting a better look.

also,no matter how much i use the knife this black undercoating doesnt wear off at all.\

another thing, doesnt the decarb inhibit rust pretty easily??....i ask because i've put this thing away wet more than once like i would anything INFI and i think if it was decarb i would've seen some rust there.

Thanks, northern1! I now remember that thread of yours where you posted those pics. Interesting stuff. Yeah, the possible "undercoating" I saw on my NMFBM is much darker than that, but like you said it's probably the pics. It's also a lot smoother, more like the old smooth black coating Busse used to have.

I tried to leave some moisture on it to see if it would rust quickly as decarb probably should, but it didn't rust at all, at least not yet.

when i stripped my black CG FBM there were some places that had what you describe. a very smooth and kind of shiny black, definitely coating. it wouldn't come off with the stripper. also, it was only the the spine areas. i tried sanding some of it off and it took forever

I know exactly what youre talking about I think, my skelly warden has a very black (coating like) look to it under the exterior muddy finish where it has flaked away. I always assumed it was raw infi or a primer of some sort before the final exterior coat is applied. I will try to post pics. of my knife later.:D

Dang !! Looks like you already did a lot of chopping with the NMFBM .. .

My NMFBM seems to be similar as far as this "undercoating" goes.
I don;t believe it is an actual coating but rather a layer of decarb or something else. This particular blade had been used in rain storms and no rust formed yet.

Here are 2 pictures of what I am working with ... I love this blade.. Only problem is the micarta slabs are getting unaligned with more and more use due to poor quality rivets :( Other than that , looks like I found a near perfect chopper for me.. :)
