coating

Guys, After wanting to play with hammers and hot stuff for many years I had a go at forging a small blade over the weekend. I had a large bolt hanging around that I was able to anneal in my BBQ with a fan on the coals :D

The next day I reheated with a blow torch and was able to flatten it pretty well. I then spent the next four or so hours filling and deciding what to do and finally decided on a small Tanto point letter opener with a 30 deg. I then dropped it in the BBQ again and got it a nice bright orange and quenched it, then reheated and allowed it to cool (was well below the lower transformation temp I hope :) ) All the quenching was a kind of graduation present for getting through a metalurgy book which took me 20 hours or 2 weeks worth of commutes on the damned train :) )

Anyway after polishing it for about two hours I noticed it starting to rust :footinmou (Of all the rotten luck!)

Are there any 'home remedies' for coating a blade without spoiling all the polishing I did (Fingers are still sore and blistered lol)

TIA

I spray em with WD40 between times I'm working on them, and use Flitz Rifle/Gun Wax when they're finished. That seems to keep the problem to a minimum. Another alternative might be bluing, but you'll still have to keep it oiled lightly. Let's see a picture!

Thanks for the feedback, I will post when its finished (as of now it's still half done in a oily rag) :)

Dave's right. I spray my blades with WD-40 constantly during construction. It's alot easier than backstepping in the process.

I dont have much money to spare at the moment due to being laid off recently and having an 11 month old baby but I think I did OK with some wet stones I got from a dollar shop, well, 100 Yen shop.

I have time on Wednesday to get some Wet and Dry rubbing down paper, what grit would you suggest for the final polishing?

I am using a about 300 (stone) at the moment to get the scale off it and dress it up a little (Read: get the thickness differential out lol :D )

TIA
