I've sent a drawing to Yangdu that faithfully, ( I hope!) returns Cobalt's original point to the AK Bowie. I have extended the width of the blade at the cho by about 3/4" and drawn a straight line to the point- no recurve. This knife will be just as thick as the AK Bowie, but work as a cleaver and general meat render and Camp Knife.

I've wanted a straight edged AK Bowie for three years. It's not really much modified from the AK Bowie we have now. I'm hoping enough sell to include it in the shopping site. I asked Yangdu if it would sell for the AK Bowie price.

Yangdu is excited about different handle possibilities- wood, horn and antler. And why not? With a regular khuk the handle has to be tough. But with the Bowie, the handle slabs are not under nearly the same amount of stress.

I'll ask Yangdu if she wants a sign up list or just introduce this model as a variation.

You already drew it, but Dave says:

- Wider tang (with accompanyingly thicker handle)...better ergonomics, better balance.

- No cho. It's not a khukuri without a cho, but this is not a khukuri and more edge is better, not worse.

- Thinner spine. HI already builds the world's toughest bowie by my reckoning. A revised model could stand to lose a little weight.

- Chakmak and karda. The AKB is lonely without them.

I'm with Shane. We demand pics.

..and some of us don't have computer skills...I sent the drawing to Yangdu. If you want an idea, go look at the bowie thread and the original Cobalt drawing. Then eliminate the recurve.

For those of you who own AK Bowies; take it out and imagine a straight edge, and the clip point rounded off.

I guess I should be flogged; the only mod who can't post picts... Did I tell you I'm still on Dial up, and when storm clouds fly over my TV goes on the frizzt?

Munk, you are the man:D  !
SIgn me up. I wouldn't be the resident AKB fanatic if i didn't partake in this special:) Man, An antler AKC (Ang Khola Cleaver) would be pretty cool. Useful? Yes. Wicked looking? Double yes!:D
Anybody ever see the movie Snatch where the character Boris the Blade whips out a big ol' cleaver to cut off Frankie Four Fingers' arm?
I'm excited about this.

Yangdu can post the picture of my ugly cardboard drawing that will propel us towards...fantasy land? At any rate, I was tempted to deepen the blade ... a lot. But, I thought about all you Bowie knife and Camp knife fanatics, and knew if it became too cleaveresk that wouldn't be 'all around'. So, a tad deeper only.

I thought Cobalt or ---- were going to draw it but since it wasn't happening I just did it.

If this project works out I'm definitely going to have one. I like the original drawing much more than the current design.

IT's pretty much going to be what you think of when the noun 'knife' comes up. Just a big, honkin, simple, knife.

I always had just a bit of hesitation about the AK bowie. This new one addresses all the points that gave me pause. Sign me up.

Gator, Yangdu will probably post it- and then we'll see if I got the outline right.

Maybe I missed something, but if you make a leaver out of cobalt I'm not sure it would be food safe.

Then you're obviously not ready for Himalayan Import's heavy water experiments...

My leavers aren't generally food safe, anyways. :p j/k

I don't know if you were kidding, so I'll also give a serious answer. Cobalt is the name of a forum member who originally suggested an Himalyan Imports rendition of a Bowie Knife. The knives themselves are made out of plain old carbon steel.

Actually, Mercedes and Volvo frequently add radiological substances to their truck springs to give a smoother ride. ;)
