Cobra Hood! Yea or Nay?

IMO the Cobra Hood looks cool but really what is the point? For me the hood interferes with flicking the blade open. And using my thumb for leverage on that part of the blade just never happens.

Make the knife simple and lose the Cobra Hood! Yes or No lets here it!

I think the cobra hood works very well indeed, in fact, so well that I don't need to really make much thumb contact with the hole at all.

But, in terms of design, I much prefer the hole on it's own. It's simple and it's genius.

Works great for me- you get the best of both hole & stud/disc opening characteristics.

IMHO, I would have to say "86 the thing!" Don't get me wrong, this new piece of innovation is a cool thing to see, but being a diehard Spyderco Hole traditionilist, I wouldn't want it on my knife. I'm glad that its attatched by a screw so that a person could modify it by taking it off if they preferred. I saw a few of these at the last gun/knife show, and overall I was impressed. But that Cobra Hood.....

Have a great and SAFE Memorial Day!

Its the begining of the end! The Hole will get smaller, the Hood will get bigger, then one day, the Hole will have disappeared. And we will have an Emmerson. Gulp.

I can see where the Cobra Hood might make it easier for someone with limited manual dexterity (such as from a disability) to open the knife. Other than that, it strikes me as being unnecessary.

Its purpose is less for opening assistance and more for thumb comfort and control, i believe. It is a very smart addition- I like it very much.

Competitors will say

"Hah! The hole doesn't work so they added a wave!"

I have a 11mm callus on my thumb that will become redundant :(

I have yet to use the Cobra Hood but it's not something I'm too interested in.

Really? It looks like it is sexually attracted to other Cobra Hoods of the same sex?

The Cobra Hood is a good addition for thumb control when doing heavy duty cutting. It goes well with the purpose of the "little-but acts big" wider Salsa blades. And I can find the opening hole and use it a few milliseconds faster with the Cobra Hood. BUT, I would not want the Cobra Hood on every Spydie. Thumb studs and disks seem to hang up on the pocket when removing or re-clipping the knife. Part of the reason I like the Spydie Hole so much is that it doesn't do that. :D But the Cobra Hood can hang up like a stud or disk. So the politically correct answer is that I like the Cobra Hood on some Spydies, but I wouldn't want it on all of them. :D

ThinkOfTheChildren,

The word "gay" in the common vernacular has held various meanings over the years, from "happy" in the early part of the century to "male homosexual" later on. More recently the term has come to describe that which is "ridiculous" or "silly" especially from a visual perspective: i.e. "That haircut looks gay" or "Man, that would be a cool looking knife without that gay Cobra Hood on the blade..."

I guess you haven't seen the hole on a Chinook! It's so big, that I think I could putt a golf-ball through it!.:D.

I don't care for the "hood"...It gets in way, and it just doesn't "look right" on a Spyderco folder.

mr44,

I am well aware of the historical and current uses of the word. I just find it stupid and immature when people use it in the way you did. It's no coincidence that "gay" is used in the pejorative sense when describing objects and "straight" is used conversely. For example,
"Are you ok?"
"Yea, I'm straight."
I just think people should think about the words they use and the implications that they hold.
"Gay" didn't come to the use that you describe just by chance.

I have been playing with a Salsa for about 3 hours now, and I have mixed feelings about it.

I like it when the blade is open because is gives me a nice place to press my thumb. I don't much like it when the knife is closed because if adds (to me) a noticalbe bit of bulk to the blade and makes it a bit easier to brush open.

If this Salsa was mine, I would regrind the hood a good bit thinner; maybe take 1/3 - 1/2 or its width off. Seems like just a little too much of a good thing right now.
