So I got a GEC in cocobolo a few weeks ago, and since then the covers have gotten noticeably darker. I'm just wondering if this is natural, and if not how I can prevent/restore it.

Yes, getting darker appearance is natural for most oily hardwoods. I like aged Cocobolo look over its bright fresh finish.

Plus Austin's been humid after all that rain. Even oils from hands can turn it darker. DM

Most dark woods will lighten up a bit if wiped down with isopropyl alcohol or acetone. In particular, some woodworkers use acetone to clean wood before finishing. I wouldn't get carried away with either of them, as they will dry out the wood if used too much. Just moisten a rag/cloth with it, and lightly wipe it down; you'll likely see the rag stain/color a little bit, as the oils come out of the wood. Try the alcohol first, as acetone is more aggressive. No need to soak it. A little bit of wax afterward can help protect the wood.
