Hello All,
I recently acquired a 2004 Large Sebenza 21 w/Cocobolo inlays. Very nice piece and my first 21! I've been utilizing my 25 so much I thought I'd get another for variety. I have a question. The cocobolo is quite dark which from what I've researched, is normal. UV rays and all. I'm wondering if anyone has sanded the wood of cocobolo, or any other variety to lighten it up. I probably wouldn't have thought about it except the cocobolo grips on my Ruger are so bright and vibrant. I wasn't sure if that could be done or if it would negatively affect the knife, value or condition-wise. I appreciate the input.

Sanding your inlays is not recommended.

Any color lightening will be temporary.

It will dramatically reduce the value of your knife.

The inlays are sealed, resealing them (and doing a clean job of it) could be an issue.

Don't do it. Buy another if you want a different wood pattern.

I have several slipjoints with Cocobolo handles. Some being bright with red tones and good grain showing, and others being much darker. It's a natural material and there is variation from tree to tree on the colors and grain.

I appreciate the comments. I definitely don't want to hurt the value. The knife wasn't operating too smoothly so once I was able to look at it at home I found all the screws a little loose. Tightened up and it feels great! Definitely a classic but amazing how smooth they are. Thanks.
