I own more knives than I could possibly use and several years ago gifted an old Recon 1 to someone. Since then I haven't really felt the need to get any more cold steel knives though I have several examples of backlocks, axis locks, liner locks, frame locks, compression locks etc. I decided to pull the trigger on a cold steel code 4 since it looked like it would fit my needs and by all accounts has a fantastic grind as well as a thin overall package. It just came in today and I have to say I am a bit disappointed. I hear all the time on these forums about how strong and secure the Triad lock is compared to axis locks, common back locks or compression locks but out of the box I have vertical blade play. Is this common?

I dont think I got a fake. The packaging looks correct; came with two pocket clips, proper blade stamping, the QR code on the box does in fact link to the cold steel website.

Only thing I can think of is that the lockbar lug isn't fully seating down into the notch in the blade tang. Try pushing down in the lockbar, or flicking the blade open really hard, and see if there's any difference. If that is the issue, it should wear in with use.

Tried to flip it as hard as I could and then snapping it out wearing gloves for protection as hard as I could and it doesnt seem to affect the vertical blade play. There isnt even a bit of side to side play though.
