i made my coffee can forge last night and fired it up at about 11pm after work. it worked perfect and i heat treated my two blades last night and one more today. someone told me to use the Bernzomatic JHT-7(so thats what i got) and the propane tank start freeze up because it was cold out so how would i put this torch to a larger propane tank. tomorrow i should finish my 1st knife amd it will look very nice.

No, no, no, you have it all wrong. Just buy another JHT-7 and use it to heat the tank on the other one to keep it from freezing :D

DISCLAIMER: THIS IS A JOKE!!!!! DO NOT DO THIS!!!!!

Actually, you should be able to go to an RV store and get all the fittings necessary. Just haul what you need in and let them help you out.

Any place that sells the popular "Buddie Heaters" should have hose adapters that let you convert from small propane bottles to LP tank valves.

I tried to make a coffee can forge, I used refractory that I made from perlite and cement. I connected two cans together and added two small propane burner to it. I let it dry for two days and tried to use it but it would not get hot enough so I figured that it was because I left the back closed and it was not getting enough air so i opened it up only to find that the cement had not dried entirely! Anyway, I have since left it alone for a week to see if maybe it would not get hot enough because the moisture carried the heat away. I also think that I may be using the wrong torches.. They are ones from sears that you start by clicking them. It looks as if they are just a tube and that is it?? Do you think that my problem wat that it was not dry or the torch? or both?

Great luck with your new toy :D:D

I was wondering this as well does the back of the forge need to be open? I am using an old fire extinguisher and cut the top off but have left the bottom untouched. Do I need to cut it off or cut a hole into it?

about your tank freezing up. i had this problem with my large forge and this is how i fixed it. stick your tank in a tub of hot water. your tank wont freeze then and you will be all good.

What I found out when I originally lit the forge is that the back burner remained blue and never seemed to really get going unless I pulled it oout of the unit. Once I opened the back up both the front and the back burners seemed to spark right up but it still did not get hot enough. I left a piece of steel I got from sears in there for 20 minutes and only the points where the flames were hitting got red hot. I am assuming it was because the refractory had not dried all the way and it kept it from heating up?? I hope that was the issue. The only other thing i can think of is that maybe the torches were not a good choice. I did notice that it did get hotter with the back open and I have come to the conclusion that it is because of the added oxygen. Plus you can forge longer pieces I suppose.

This is just my experience, a pro would know better than me. Good luck and maybe we can get our forges both working.

Thanks for this info! I'm trying to build a fancy forced air welding furnace, but this my be the inexpensive option I've been looking for.

I have given mine enough time to dry so I will fire it up today if I can. I manage a hydroponics center and was able to make castable refractory for peanuts. I simply mixed perlite (those little white pellets you see in potting soil) with furnace cement. I think it cost me about 15 bucks for everything.

Let us know how it works!

I know this is an OLD thread...but I happened to have been searching for this information all night long lol. I have the same torch, which has a regulator assembly, then a 4' hose...and ends in the burner. For the convenience of others in the future, I'd like to supply the answer on this thread:

See, my problem isn't the can freezing over...I live in Hell...err, Phoenix, AZ. My problem is I have zero interest in buying a $7 mapp gas tank to forge out a 7" oal length blade, then possibly another to heat treat...nor do I want to fire up my larger forge. The little paint can I'm building will work perfectly, and when hooked up to my 100lb tank...should last months =D.

Hope that helps someone in the future!

Cris

propane takes 15 minutes, mapp takes 5 minutes. Propane is cheaper but I'd like something in between. How 'bout propoline(sp?)?
