Do you think with stainless steel you could still sharpen a knife with a coffee cup bottom?
If you don't have mineral oil what's a safe lubricant for a slippies joints?

That woud depend on the cup, your patients, and your skills. Any lube will do.

If it's a Buck, Case, or Vic yes.
If you want a food safe lube, I'd say Pam. Elsewise 3in1 oil is good. Don't use any gun oil.

I use the bottom of a coffee mug when I'm feeling lazy. It puts a reasonable edge after some light stropping. Granted it's not the best thing to use, but if it's available, why not?

I touched up a Spyderco Delica the other day with the bottom of a coffee mug no problem. Finished her up with a strop on some thick cardboard.

I tried using a coffee cup but I think my knife blade was harder than the styrofoam...it made a heck of a mess :D

Just to be clear are we talking about the bottom of a stainless steel cup or ceramic. If we're talk the unglazed bottom of a ceramic cup.My question is do we really need a lubricant like oil

I sharpened the knife on the bottom of a dixie cup ;)

I use it dry, works well for touch ups. So does lowering your car window and using the top of the glass.
