This one shipped out today to a fellow formite. It has a 8 1/2" forged blade of W-2. the handle material is afzelia lay and the fittings are nickel silver. I have made a few coffin hnadles before but had usually rounded the handle over into an oval cross section. On this one I wanted to facet the sides of the coffin to capture the unique pattern of the afzelia lay wood. I was real suprised with the feel of the handle. It fits very comfortably and securely in the hand and you always know right where the cutting edge is at. It was also very challenging keeping everything even and uniform. It is a style I will be using more often. Let me know what you think.

I think it's the big Brother of the bowie I owned at one time, and I love this one even more.

Craig:

That is one-more-nice-piece...... I love that handle material. Could I ask where you got it?

Great looking knife........ Thanks for sharing.

Just beautiful and I really like the faceting on the sides of the coffin.

Great looking knife Craig.

I recently noticed that you're going to be at the Ohio show in November, I'm looking forward to seeing your work in person.

Craig... YOU ARE DA MAN! You just keep getting better and better. I love this one. Keep 'em coming!

Like I said on the phone today, it is really rewarding, watching your work get better and better(it was pretty danged good to start with).

I am not a big fan of the coffin hilt, or of spear points, yet you manage to bring both elements together in a pleasing and flowing manner.

Well done.

Best Regards,

Yeah, I know. ;) The facets really ain't just fer looks, are they? I generally make my facets a bit wider, and then they will actually almost line up with the finger joints, locking it in the hand even better.

I am curious about your thoughts on using the spear point pattern. Is there some use you were after where the spear performs better than a clip? Or is it just a style thing?

Say, you were at the Saint Louis show this spring, right? I think I missed you on the last day. Maybe I'll bump into you at a show sometime.

Thanks for the comments Guys! I got the Afzelia Lay from Mike at WSSI he usually has some of it.

I like the spear point and the clip point. Yeah I do all three local shows, the St louis show, the Mt. Vernon show and the Bethalto show.

i will get teh ohio show info for you tomorrow.

Wow Craig,THAT'S a Coffin handle.Craig is one of the few knifemakers I trust when it comes to the finished product, meaning everything lining up,and Dead On Even Tips.I have one of his Slim Pickens fighters and IMHO it is a true fighter-It's lightning fast, good ergonomics, easily concealable(for it's size) & Wickedly Sharp.

Very well done. I was wondering what the story is behind the wood. It looks like petrified coral/bees wax. What an unusual pattern. Where does it come from?

The wood is from Laos. I have had a few pieces of this and the vascular pattern runs throughout the whole piece. Afzelia also comes in burls and is very pretty wood.
