Do any of you have any experience with this knife? I am wondering about the spring mechanism, which I can't seem to find any info on by googling. Does it lock up (making it illegal in the UK) or not? Looks like a cheap but solid user.

Looks like a simple friction folder (no spring, no lock) to me. Just the tension of the handle 'squeezing' the blade, to keep it open. Seems right in line with a European knife. (Edit: see linked thread below; this might actually be a slipjoint).

Here's another thread that might be informative. The knife looks very similar to a so-called 'douk-douk' knife, which does actually have a backspring, just like a typical slipjoint:

It does look like it, but what made me unsure was a video on youtube where it seemed to snap open with a loud click. I suppose my inexperience comes in here, but is that normal?

Edit: Thanks david, that seems to explain it!

If it 'snaps' open, then it seems as if it does have a spring (slipjoint-style) in it. I edited my earlier post with a link to another thread that might confirm this.

It's a slipjoint made like the Douk Douk, by the same company, but (I believe) with a stainless steel blade. I've always been meaning to get one but the small version is tricky to find.

the douk douk does not lock although it has a very strong spring and a strong half-stop.
doesnt look like this one locks, either. although i have no direct experience with this knife. so, yeah, probably not a useful post here. lol

As far as I know is the Cognet Squirrel the same knife like the Douk Douk. The only difference is that it has a stainless blade. The Douk Douk come with at C75 carbon steel blade and the Cognet Squirrel with a 420 steel.

Just as far as I can remember.

Folding Douk-Douk knife squirrel small size, overall length 160 mm, closed length 86 mm, weight 36g, carbon steel blade XC75. Handle coated chromium on nickel.

Ok... then I got definitelly wrong.

Sorry for this. In two aspects of my post above.
The steel and the blade shape.

Don't worry hehe :) I find it extremely impressive how you guys can keep track of so many different knives at all!

I've been interested in the small L'écureuil too, I have a small Douk-Douk and it is a great little inexpensive folder with a heckuva back spring. The Douk-Douk is a slipjoint, I assumed that the Squirrel is the same.

I own one that has a carbon steel blade. I kinda prefer it to the conventional Douk-Douk. I like the blade profile a bit better. Its spring is incredibly stout to say the least.

I don't have one, so this may not be useful.

But based on the half-stop in the video I'd say there is a backspring making this a slip joint.

It had a nice dark patina, but I gave the blade a convex edge and got rid of a bit of it though. The carbon steel (1075 I think) is left on the softer side, however.

L'Ecureuil (Squirrel) is a spearpoint slipjoint with a very strong backspring. Except for blade shape and emblem, it is the same as the Douk-Douk. There are other models as well with the Douk-Douk blade but different emblems, like the Tiki. They come in small and medium, with a Giant also available, but I don't know if that's available in any model but the Douk-Douk. They all have a choice of carbon or stainless blades.

I have carbon and stainless medium Douks, and medium and small Squirrels. The Squirrels seem to me to have a bigger, tougher blade. The backspring is so strong on all the Cognet knives that they make great keychain knives, specially the small. They will not fall open accidentally.

No one hand opening, no flicking, no lock, should be legal just about anywhere. Like the Opinel, they are Old-World, and very good workman's knives.

I recently got my second K55K Mercator, an old German design similar to the Douk-Douk line. The Mercator does have a back lock, though, and is easier to open and close. My first was my high school knife! It was carbon and I wasn't careful; eventually, it corroded so much I replaced it with an electrician's knife.
