I've been thinking about expanding my guard materials from my every day 416 SS to include bronze. l have seen a few photos of knives with coined spacers (photo below) in various designs and am intrigued by it. How is it done and how big a deal is it to get the tooling for it? Can it be done on stainless too? I always thought it was done by a patient guy with a metal checkering file, but I'm not that patient!

Thanks for the help.

I do my stainless pocket knife edges with a checker file - than use a jewelers saw to cut them deeper.

The guard in the picture appears to have been done with a 3 square jeweler's file. Checkering files cut straight lines-those cuts appear to be "V" shaped.
I use both checkering files and knurling tools on my folder liners.

Files and sometimes a jewelers saw.....and a Sharpie.

I start by marking the guard into quarters. I then make a mark in the middle of each quarter. I continue until the marks are even and fill the edge as I desire. From there, I use the saw to make a shallow cut on each mark. Then you use the files to make the pattern.

Yep there really is not a quick/short cut way to do this. That said I don't find it takes to long to do them with a checkering file. If you have not tried it give it a shot you might be surprised.

Thanks for the input fellas - looks like nothin' cool is easy, is it??

Coining an edge can be very fast and easy. The question is whether this method will be deep enough for your intended look. I can coin a complete center liner in less than a minute, using basically the same principle that the early cutlers in Sheffield did.

You maybe interested in this link. It is a quick tutorial I did on the subject on the SA blade forum.

great tip. If you wanted deeper you could use it to get your initial marks and then file/saw
