Leave it to a new maker to re-invent the wheel AGAIN. But I am always experimenting with different stuff for future knives. I am looking at a piece of scrap 5160 that I mirrored on one side then etched with Coke a Cola. YES Coke. Well it contains Phosphoric acid so I figured it would work for a cheap etching solution. Here's what I found.
I used a sharpy permanent marker for the resist. However instead of etching the exposed metal like other etchants the Coke etched only where the marker lines were.
Go figure
Anyway after washing it off and lightly buffing first with ZAM then No Scratch Pink it looked pretty cool. I will say that, first it was Flat Coke and it sat in there (Outside in Arizona) for at least 24hrs. Maybe fresh stuff will work even better. I will let you know.

I don't know what your talking about officer.
I swear it's the truth.
Thats my story and I'm sticking to it.
What witness?
I want my lawyer.
