I am still in the process of trying to find out which patterns often feature Half stops. I prefer one straight pull. For those of you who have had several coke bottles did yours usually not have half stops. I have found that Barlows have half stops on all the ones I have had but I have only had one coke bottle.
Thanks for your input.

The only coke bottle I have is the large Rough Rider.
It does not have half stops.

If you are looking for a Barlow without half stops, those by Schrade (Imperial, Old Timer, and Uncle Henry) Rough Rider, and Marbles don't have them. I don't know if those by Utica have half stops. I think r8shell r8shell has a Barlow by Utica. Maybe she will chime in with that information.

I only have one Coke Bottle, an very small old Case, which has half stops.

The Utica Barlow does not have half stops.

I have a Winchester black box medium coke bottle (3½") from 1987, and it DOES have half stops on both spear main and pen secondary. They're not too hard to find on the secondary markets.

I only have one, this old Ulster. It has half stops.

I have several coke bottle pattern knives, they are all vintage from various makers. All of my examples have half stops. If you don't want a half stop, lots of pen knives do not have them. On the single blade side sodbusters tend to have a smooth pull as well. Happy hunting!

There are patterns that are more likely to have half stops and others that aren't. And there are exceptions. But I wouldn't really call a half stop a defining feature of a pattern in general. It varies a bit. On present day knives, some custom knife makers put a half stop on almost everything. If you look at individual knives, like the 32 stockman from Case, some had half stops and the later knives did not. The 32 stockman is interesting since it's an example of an exception and an example of change over time. Most stock knives don't have half stops. As another example of variation, some 100 year old pen knives had a half stop on one blade and a cam end on the other. Other forum members gave some nice examples of the coke bottle pattern. As the examples show, it varies.

Many thanks to all who helped me in understanding this better. I am really excited about exploring the world of large blade traditional patterns.
