Gents,

I received this via e-mail earlier from a friend of mine who is big into IPSC shooting:

Gentlemen,

I bring you the sad news that Jeff Cooper passed away today. He was 86 years old. I think it is safe to say that he has had some influence, even if you didn't realize it, on every practical shooter. There would be no IPSC without Col. Cooper. His influence is found around the world and every day in Iraq and Afghanistan, and other bloody places of the world, techniques and concepts developed by Jeff are helping our brave men and women of the military to let the other guy die for his country/fanatic religion.

Jeff Cooper brought us the "scout rifle concept" and has done much more for preserving our shooting rights than many will ever realize. I've always enjoyed reading "Cooper's Corner" in the back of Guns and Ammo.

I should also mention that Jeff was one of the founding fathers of "Gunsite".

God Speed, Jeff

RIP Jeff, I enjoyed your editorials.

and now i pour a scotch and drink a toast to you!

He will always be remembered along with the likes of Elmer Keith. Few people truely changed shooting doctrine.

I always regret not knowing about Skeeter Skelton, Bill Jordan, Elmer Keith, et al before their deaths. Cooper is the first of that pantheon that I consider to be one I "knew".

Fair winds and following seas, Jeff.

We are diminished by his passing.

We are enriched by his teachings, and his legacy.

Semper Fi, Sir - Semper Fi!

John

That is truly saddening news. I commend his spirit and lifelong efforts on behalf of his fellow man to the Great Rangemaster. Tonight I will hoist a pint of stout to his memory. Godspeed, sir!

An intellectual no nonsense fighting spirit. I enjoyed reading his insightfull columns in the gun mags. God Bless!

I found some more information regarding Lt. Col. Cooper's passing:

John Dean "Jeff" Cooper (10 May 1920 - 25 September 2006) [1] is recognized as the father of what is commonly known as "The Modern Technique" of handgun shooting, and considered by many to be the world's foremost expert on the use and history of small arms.

Born John Dean Cooper, but known to his friends as "Jeff", Cooper was a former Marine Lt. Colonel who served in World War II and in Southeast Asia during the Korean War. In addition to his expertise in firearms, he was a history instructor, philosopher, adventurer, and author. He is also known as "the Guru."

In 1976 Cooper founded the American Pistol Institute (API, also known as "Gunsite") in northern Arizona to train law enforcement and military personnel, as well as law-abiding civilians. He sold the firm in 1989 but continued living on the ranch. He was well-known for his cogent and thoroughly researched advocacy of large caliber handguns for personal defense, especially the 1911 Colt.

Cooper died peacefully at his home on the afternoon of Monday, September 25, 2006. [2]

Don't be sad!

I was lucky enough to have met the Colonel...and even talked guns with him.

That man enjoyed his life fully and completely. There's nothing worth doing, that he didn't do (several times, in some cases).

No sense mourning a life lived that well.

We are not diminished by his passing, but enriched that we knew him.
