they're ok for casual stuff, nothing serious. for real work use a normal soldering iron. if you need portability get a butane iron. i wont go too much into why, i'll just tell you that it melts the solder through the two contacts at the tip, the solder completes the circuit.

What brand of butane iron are you using. Ours get blazingly hot - butane cartridge and pizeoelectric start with no solder to form a continuous circuit. They've been banned from our semiconductor Fab for safety reasons.
Currently use a rechargeable Wahl IsoTip 60. Heats and cools fast. Handles most everything. The tip is pretty fine so I just cant toss it in the box like I could the old Weller pens. Cost was reasonable at $49.00.
