Cold Steel AK-47 Price Variance—WHY?

I don't get it.

Cold Steel's AK-47 with aluminum handles are going for $59.99 at Smoky Mountain Knife Works, while the same model with G-10 handles are going for $96.99. What is it about G-10 (which, let's face it, doesn't cost all that much since even less expensive knives use it) that makes it worth more than the aluminum-handled one?

I realize that the G-10 model also has a black coating on its blade, but that's never resulted in such a price difference. The bottom line is that Cold Steel wants almost a hundred bucks for an AUS8A blade knife. And as much as I like some of Cold Steel's offerings, I just can't see what I'd be getting for the extra money. Before I'd shell out $97 for the G-10 model, I'd buy TWO of the cheaper ones and throw in the dif.

I've got a bundle of cheap liner locks with G-10 handles, so it dosen't really wow me. In fact, if they made the aluminum handles and the blade black, I'd rather have one of them.

I think the black one with g10 would cost more because it would be better for sneaking up on people with and everyone knows that operators use them....:barf: ...seriously though, a mate was selling one for real cheap but the thing that turned me off was that it has Made in Taiwan written on it. I wont by knives with made in taiwan or made in china on them...that's just my opinion....oh and what has it got to do with an AK-47...lol...stupid name.

Thanks for the responses. Again, I'd rather have a black adonized frame and black coated blade than the G-10 model. Cold Steel also put G-10 handles on its Recon 1 folder. I have an earlier version of the Recon 1 and after seeing the new version, am happier with the version I have. The G-10 offers some advantages: it's easier to hold when wet, it doesn't react to the cold like aluminum and other finishes. The blade material in the new knife is a step up, AUS8 vice the 440A of the old.

I honestly think it's a typo--I just got the new Brigade Quartermasters catalog, and the aluminum handled model is $59.99, while the G10 model is $69.99. (96 vs. 69 - it's an easy enough transposition of numbers...)

You got it right. Same reason you can't get a black blade with out serrations. Everyone knows that operators prefer to have that half serrated edge on a 3.5 in blade so you can't do anything with it:rolleyes:

That's probably the best comment I've ever read about CS.
I don't know what you mean. I have a Cold Steel and when I
use it, I think I'm USING A CHAIN SAW! Truly this knife is a
CUTTING DYNAMO! That's why C.S.'s competitors are SO AFRAID
of that knife! (Did I miss any marketing cliches?)

I think you took what I said about Cold Steel wrong.I have many Cold Steel knives (20+) Its just that I find it strange that Cold Steel sells dresses, baseball bats, and war clubs and more crazy stuff. Dont you find that strange? What in the Wide,Wide World of Sports is next?

Well, there's nothing like diversification. I have a bunch
of Cold Steels too, but I find their advertising amusing. Didn't
know about the dresses, though. I must have missed one of
their catalogs. I wish they'd offer some gag gifts once in
a while. You know, one like this:

actually, that seems to be true. I forget who posted it (it was someone in the industry) but feedback from police/military was a general preference for combo-edged knives.

Yes, sarong. Thankfully, Lynn Thompson doesn't model them for his DVD.

Now that truly would be to much. :D LOL

Edit: My son has one of these knives and it has been great for him. It has seen a lot of abuse and is still working well. The weak point on it in my opinion is the thumb notch thing. The screw in it came loose and he lost it.

I think you are dealing with market conditions and availability which explains the price variances. Some places ell things cheap but when you order from them nothing is in stock and they go out and get it for you at that time or else do a drop ship. This way they have no inventory to carry and you get a low price but often slow service.
