I have been looking for a meaty, thick folder and was considering shelling out big money for a Zero Tolerance. I was in my local cutlery shoppe and asked the guy for a recommendation. His suggestion: American Lawman. As soon as I held it in my hands, I fell in love and bought it without a second thought. The Tri-Ad is much stiffer than I'm used to but I don't mind at all. Thank you to Cold Steel for making such a badass knife that is exactly what I wanted!

The lock will be less stiff after it wears in with time. Congrats, you've got one of the strongest, toughest folders on the planet!

I really like mine, even more that I scraped off the teflon coating. What's not to like? Its good strong folder made from good materials. Mine sees more pocket time than some of my "better" more expensive folders.

One of these days I should get one of these...just so far, every time I think about it, I can't bring myself to pull the trigger.

I was like that for a while. I'd see reviews on YouTube or read them on various sites and think "I should get one of those some day." As soon as I opened it up and held it in my hand, I was sold. I have never had that happen before with a knife so the Lawman is definitely a special one.

Part of my problem is, every time I think about getting one, I wind up with something else. There's still a LOT of Cold Steel folders I need before I'll be totally happy with what I have(I haven't got a Rajah 3 yet either, but I KNOW I'm going to!)

Yeah, my major problem was I would buy knives online through work because I get a discount. I told the story on one forum of how I bought FOUR Spydies and returned them all before I went to a shoppe and handled a Squeak, which I then bought. Same for CS, I've owned a Counter Point II, Grivory Paradox and a Double Agent, all of which went back because they didn't feel right, which the American Lawman did.
I also have the disease of going to buy one knife and then I get distracted by a different one and buy it instead of what I came in for. That worked out for the Griptilian I got but nothing else. :)

Haven't tried to take it apart, it's all torx except for two pins that I believe are where the lock pivots. Seems simple though. I thought about removing the coating but I am crap at sharpening so stonewash is out.

Yeah, I get distracted a lot. This week, a blue handled Opinel 8 distracted me...luckly Opinels are cheap, so I was able to work it into my order without having to take anything else out other than a $7 book(which I already have, just in a fairly beat up condition, was just getting a replacement which can wait)

Not to change the topic of the thread but where can I find out dealers that sell Opinels in a store rather than online? As stated before, I got burned on 4 Spydies and a couple CS because I couldn't feel them. I've wanted an Opinel for a while just because they are so old school and yet still very useful.

I like cold steel and had a voyager as EDC for year back when I wasn't into knives much.I liked the fact it had the tri-ad lock and was built strong. Then knives became more a hobby and the relatively strong spring and boring back lock just didn't do it for me anymore.

I've bought so many crappy knives that just sit in my drawer now unused. While I started to buy better knives with nicer blade steels, I have never owned one as beefy and sturdy as the American Lawman. Just holding it closed in my hand feels right, not that my Spydies aren't ergonomic too.

I have no idea, I don't really buy knives in stores other than Kershaw's budget line, cause the only things stores here carry aside from the Kershaws is basically a small selection of SOG stuff(not a big SOG fan), lotsa Gerber(esp the crappy Bear Grylls stuff, blech), Buck 110s(already have a custom one), couple of the most very basic Victorinox SAK models, and plus cheap junky S&W and Winchester stuff.

The big box stores near me (Target, Walmart, Dick's) are like that, lots of Gerber and Winchester craptastics abound. There is a cutlery place locally that sells high quality kitchen knives as well as pocket knives. They have SOGs and Bucks but they also have Benchmade, Spyderco, Cold Steel, CRKTs etc. Price wise, they are a bit high but supporting a local business where I can handle the blades is important to me because all the other places have them in blister packs :(

I'm not against buying an Opinel online, I just want to be sure it feels right in my hand so I don't have the hassle of sending it back.

The only place I have locally is House of Blades. They have a better selection, but they're also pricey, and despite being "local" it's still a good 45 minutes from my house. Honestly though, Opinels run like $10-12, I'd just chance it and if I turned out not to like it, I'd just take the hit and move on. I'm not wealthy by any means, and for a $50 knife, yeah sometimes I'd prefer to handle them first, but for a $10 Opinel or Mora, I'd be willing to gamble.
