hey, what are your opinions on cold steels san mai III. Does it take a good edge, is it durable, and what other steel is vg-1 most comparible to. I would also like to hear you experiences with is. thanks.

I only own one knife in their SM3 and it doesn't see any use due to its blade shape. It is for defensive use only, not a utility knife.

VG-1 itself is quite similar in edge retention performance to VG10. VG1 takes an excellent edge, similar to that of 154CM.

I have read posts from those who own San Mai III laminated VG1 that it is tough. I do not know how it compares to Carbon Steel in toughness. I do know that it will outlast carbon steel in edge retention.

VG1 is very close to AUS10 and GIN-1

Why they laminate it I have no idea.....other then to charge more money I suppose. It's not a premium super hard steel that requires laminating...

VG1 would require laminating if you were making a chopper blade out of it, which is what most of the San Mai III blades are.

good to know because i just got a sexy looking san mai III srk and im hoping it will be good. I have a fallkniven a1, but after taking a good hard look at it I just can't bring myself to use it. Think it will match up at all?
