I like the design of the CS Black Bear classic, but want to know if there is something similar (or better in your opinion) made in USA. Any ideas?

Will be used for imaginary zombie self-defense and when not in use, a safe-queen.

How about the Entrek Sub-hilt Silhouette (scroll down)?

I agree with you -- I like the design on the Black Bear quite a lot. In my experience Cold Steel's VG-1 San Mai III stuff is excellent, and I've own quite a few over the years. Nice fit and finish, and sharp as hell out of the box. My current favorites from them are the Natchez and Laredo bowies, both of which I think would stand up well in a zombie apocalypse, I think.

A lot of folks on the forum will knock Cold Steel, mostly for Lynn Thompson's antics, which is not undeserved, but doesn't really reflect on the quality of the knives. Just tune out the inevitable white noise.

I'm not sure I'm aware of another sub-hilt fighter design quite like this one currently in production, though I sure there must be.

I'm another fan of the Black Bear Classic, and Cold Steel's fixed blades in general. Excellent designs executed with quality materials. For those on more of a budget, they take the same designs and execute them with different, but still quality materials. Example: Laredo, Trailmaster, Recon Scout executed in San Mai III or SK-5; Black Bear in San Mai III or OSS in Aus 8. I appreciate the fact that Cold Steel can think of their knives as weapons, and then produce them with that idea in mind. When the zombies get real, it's always good to have a little Cold Steel with you.......... a big Cold Steel is even better!!
