Hello

I was able to strip a Mini Recon very easily with just a wire brush but now I have a Older G10 AK47 Ultra Lock with the same steel and finish and am really having a rough time getting the black paint off the blade and clip. What brand of paint stripper has worked best for you in getting to that awesome stonewashed finish under the old black paint Cold Steel used before the new DLC finish?.

Thank You

Any good paint stripper should work fine.

Visit the big box stores and look for stuff like Citristrip, Jasco, Klean Strip, etc.

We use Citristrip in the woodshop. Safe enough to use inside. Works fine on removing the epoxy coating off Kabar Becker knives.

Jasco works really well. The last cheap no name brand paint stripper I used on a Schrade SCHF16 I had to let it soak about 24 hours before the black blade paint would rinse off. The Jasco only needed about 20 minutes. I think they all pretty well work. Some just might take multiple coats or extended soak times.

Is the pivot area coated too?

Do you have to take it apart to strip it?

I have a Recon 1 that's starting to look a little rough.

Yes and no.

I've seen where people leave the knife assembled and just strip the part of the blade that shows but I prefer stripping the whole blade and clip.

Search YouTube for some step by step instructions. The blade clip and thumb plate on my AK47 is really old so it will have to soak in the stripper overnight but it's looking really nice so far. I am using the Wal-Mart strongest Klean-Strip Premium Stripper gel and a wire brush. Don't forget to wear gloves that stuff will really burn your hands up fast.

Just wanted to point out that there is a difference between the Teflon coating and the newer DLC stuff. The Teflon is pretty easy to remove, I simply scraped it off my Mini Recon 1 with a boxcutter (though that certainly took a long time). While I don't have anything with the DLC coating I've heard that it is an entirely different beast and so you may not be able to remove it as it is chemically bonded to the steel. Keep that in mind as it may explain the difficulties you're having.
