Cold Steel Black Sable update...

I've been away for over a month making a livin' (the less said, the better). It's good to be back on the forum with an update on the Cold Steel Black Sable, which has generated plenty of controversy among members. First, the knife, which I have carried as a daily-use tool, is a terrific performer; the quality of manufacture is high: everything remains tight and effective after a great deal of hard work with rope, wood and leather. But I have found a flaw previously unmentioned! Now this annoying malfunction could be a particularity of my own knife, but if it extends across the production, Ventura will be obliged to address the problem. Basically, upon closing, the edge of the blade just slightly rests upon the inside of the lock mechanism, which results in a tiny indentation of 1-2 millimeters in length being pushed into the edge itself about three-quarters of an inch from the base of the blade (at the bolster end of the blade). This is of course a minor irritant, but a freak like me is inevitably going to be driven nuts by this sort of thing. I'll call Cold Steel next week and apprise them of the situation. Resolution would involve slightly shaving down the inside of the lock bar to allow for extra blade clearance.... You may depend on a report once I talk to those folks.

Hey TB, Glad you're back and all is well. Sorry to hear about the minor letdown with the Black Sable. Hopefully it will be resolved quickly. Hope to see more of your reviews.

Great to hear from you, my friend! I hope this note finds you kickin' butt and takin' names, as per usual--I always enjoy reading your posts.

This Black Sable development is a bit of a hiccup, 3Guardsmen, but I'm hoping that Cold Steel will have encountered the problem and found a way to resolve it expeditiously (I don't want to be separated from this knife, which is still my favorite folder of the moment). By the way, we spent some time in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan: what a beautiful region! If ever there was a paradise for the outdoorsman, the UP is it. I thought about your fondness for Becker knives, as I used my Campagnon for every task imaginable, short of chopping wood for the fire; I just love that sharpened crowbar!

Thanks, TB! Same old grind for me. Just work and not much play. Glad to hear you had a good time in MI. Speaking of Beckers, I've got my BK&T #3 (TacTool) sitting in my duty bag just waiting for a chance to get used hard.

Sorry to hear that you'll be without the Black Sable for a while, but now would be a most opportune time to EDC one of your other favorites (hint, hint- Spyderco Ayoob). Whatever the issue turns out to be with your CS, I hope it is resolved quickly, and to your complete satisfaction.

Be safe, My friend.

Best wishes,
3Guardsmen

Bless your good heart, 3Guardsmen. I must say it gives me little pleasure that the knife is going to be headin' to California for awhile.... But you've saved the day by suggesting that I just buy a Spyderco Ayoob to play with while the Black Sable is off getting improved. If that move doesn't confirm every last one of my wife's suspicions, nothing ever will--you're a genius!

I love the looks of that nasty Becker #3. There isn't a knife those folks make that isn't worth owning.

Good to know that you're suffering the same old routine, my friend. After all, why should I be the only miserable wretch on this forum? Separation anxiety: it's hell.

I'll be in touch with a simple description of how Cold Steel treats its serious customers. Take care of yourself, 3Guardsmen!

Talked with Miguel at Cold Steel, who was friendly and understanding. He explained that the Black Sable is currently on back-order (two months, minimum), and that I would be better served holding on to the knife, until the new supply comes in. I don't want to be separated from the thing for a long period; this is by far the best solution, particularly since the problem in question is exceedingly minor, and calculated to annoy a freak like me--no sane person would notice this tiny imperfection. There just ain't enough cells left in my tiny brain to fry over one to two millimeters of slightly indented steel....
