Hi all,

I dropped by the Cold Steel site and looks like they have bought a blowgun company:
http://www.coldsteel.com/blowguns.html - pretty reasonable prices.

I have one of the cheapie .40 caliber blowguns which is more of a “toy” but wouldn’t consider using for hunting… but a .625 caliber is getting serious! Does anyone have any experience with these… which darts work best for hunting?

So… any blowgun fanatics out there?
cheers,

When I was in Australia earlier this year I met a girl who used a blow gun for hunting. About two foot long, camoflauged, don't know what brand or calibre. She let me have a go, long spike darts certainly stuck into wood ok!

She was using it on rabbits, lizards etc, it wouldn't kill them but it'd slow them down enough for her to catch. Kinda cruel to be honest (also illegal). Then she'd eat them.

This was out on the Nullabor. Strange place.

I used to play with these blowguns in my younger days. We call them blowpipes over in Malaysia.

The natives make them from bamboo. Very effective in hunting monkeys and other small game. The darts, usually made from bamboo slivers, are dipped in poison, left to dry and then are used to great effectiveness.

Monkeys up in tall tropical trees can be shot down from a height of about 20 feet, or more.

I used to practise on cigarette boxes perched on window sills. Scared the daylights of my aunty who persistently asked me to stop. I was getting pretty good at it too.

I "made" many blowguns when I was a kid. Usually we used aluminium pipe from TV antennas. They were about 10 mm wide and we cut them in lenght about 1-1,5 m.
Arrows were made of a thin steel rod or from wood about 10-15 cm long. The arrows had vanes of wool yarn glued and bound to the tail end and a sharpened buissness end. When making the arrow from wood we put a small nail in the front and tapered the shaft.
The only living thing I shot was a little bird. The distance was about 5-6 meters. The small metal dart pierced the bird and it dropped from the tree it sat in. (it`s illegal to hunt with a blowgun in Norway, but hey, officer, I was just a kid )
I believe that blowguns can be a lethal small game getter in trained hands.
