Cold Steel Bushman Bowie

After watchining Noss4 test the Bushman I purchased one for my son which is very nice knife fr the money. Well I noticed they have a bowie version now so I ordered one and it is hard to believe it is made out of the same steel or is even made in the same place. The bowie that I got in the mail feels and looks like junk and is nothing like the regular Bushman my son has. The bottom of the handle is all crooked and uneven and in short it looks like it was carved out of a lawn mower blade by a kindergard kid. I would not have been so disapointed if the other Bushman was not so nice a knife. So I do not know if they are made in the same factory or not but I would not waste my money on another bowie version after getting this in the mail. Hopefully I can do some cutting with it this weekend. This Bushman was made in China but I am not sure where my sons was made.

It makes me sick to see so much GARBAGE being imported into the US from China! Now Cold Steel has gone that route with some of its knives, too, I see. I'm really glad I already have all I'll ever need. :barf:

Well, like I said I am not sure where the regular Bushman my son had was made but I could recomend that knife wherever it was made but not the the bowie one I just got. I will say say the G.I. Tanto I have and the Shangishadows I have are great knives for the price.

BRASMAN: This is very disappointing to hear. I ordered one today. I love the Bushman it's a very versatile tough knife. I was hoping for an improvement in chopping ability with the Bowie. Do you have any photos you can post of it ?

I was hoping for an improvement in chopping ability with the Bowie.

When I first saw one, that was my thought, too. However, the specs showed the Bowie had neither extra length nor weight (in fact, it weighs less), so I suspect it would not perform any better as a chopper.

Brasman, although that Bushman Bowie you got recently from Cold Steel sounds disappointing, I really appreciate you alerting those of us who enjoy buying and using economical cutlery. I had not seriously considered the original Bushman until Cold Steel ran them on sale in their pre-Christmas sale flyer late last fall. I believe they were priced at two for $30, so I ordered a pair of them and I was pleasantly surprised when they arrived. Now I wish I had bought a Mini-Bushman or two before they were phased out, but my $10 Frost Clipper Moras fill that same niche very well anyway. Maybe I'm wrong, but I was under the impression the original Bushmen were made in South Africa, just like their budget grade LTC kukris have been. The two Bushmen I got last fall are very well ground and finished, though, and the cheapo kukris I've seen all needed a lot of file work to even begin to cut worth beans. Regardless of their origin, those original standard Bushmen were really useful, decent knives in my opinion.

shecky: This is a little confusing to me that all the specs are the same but it weighs less. Did they draw the handle thinner or something ?

The handle is shorter and yes you can feel the difference in the weight when you hold it. I will have some pics up in an hour or so.

I agree and that is why I was disapointed in this new one.

Ok here are some pictures. Now you might think it is great but I am just saying that compared to the original side by side it looks and feels like garbage. The steel is probably just as tough and I am not saying it will not work but it sure is not the deal the original one was. What scares me is that I want another original but I am afraid to order one because if it is made like the bowie I do not want it.

OK here we go.

The Original

The Bowie

Notice the blade on the original is straight but the one on the bowie is not.

Notice how uneven the end of the handle is. The one on my original Bushman is flat and even.

Here they are side by side but you realy have to hold them in person to see what I am talking about.

NO! I am not a Cold Steel hater. I own about eight of their knives and three hawks. This Bowie is the only thing I have gotten that is that disapointing except for the edge on the hawks which is easily fixed.
These two knives have to be made in a different factory because one is nice and one looks like it was made by a drunken monkey. Just my opinion. However I will say again that it may work just fine and it did slice up a fairly dense ham no problem.

Well sorry about the red Xs I guess I can not post pics.

Does anyone know if the "original" bushman is still made good? Or did that now "crap out" as well?
- Thanks

Noss4,

I am blind and dumb. For some reason I can not find an email address. Is it the postmaster adress thing at the bottom of your page?

Edit: I sent the pictures to the postmaster address. If they are to large I can shrink them and send them again.

BRASMAN: Thanks for sending me the photos. I can see the defects in the blade and handle. Disappointing.

Well I would love to see the one you ordered turn out OK. The new finish does not bother me. In fact it seems to hold on to some of the oil when you wipe the blade down which could help keep the blade from rusting.

BRASMAN: I'll post a photo to this thread as soon as I get it in. I always liked the smooth finish on the original. Your correct, the new finish looks more oil absorbent. Thanks again.

OK If you look in the post you will see the pics now. I was using the wrong thing to post them.

I just go my Bushman Bowie today.. The blade seems a little straighter then BRASMAN'S. It does have a slight angle to it.

The end of the handle is uneven. The handle is not as thick as the original.

The handle has been welded at the seam unlike the original Bushman.

The Bowie feels better to me because of the wider blade. The knife came sharp and was easily able to cut heavy cardboard. I hope it's as tough as the
original ? Time to go play.
