Cold Steel Bushman Destruction test video (links at bottom)

I’ve had a Bushman lying around my shop for a wile l using it for
Various tasks. I decided to see how tough it really is.

Fist I placed the tip in the vive and did a bend test. I was easily able to get the blade
to bend about 20 –25 degrees. I did this 10 times. The knife didn’t break and no tip failure.

I proceeded to hack into a 2x4, cutting through it. Then, I hammered the back of the blade into the wood. No blade failure at this point.

I moved onto the landscaping brick hacking away. The sparks begin to fly.
I hacked for about 10 minutes in to this brick cutting a V notch. The edge never chipped
Just dented. After this I was getting tired and the knife keep going.

I begin to hammer the back of the blade into the brick chipping away sections and splitting the brick. No blade failure, just denting very little actually considering the time evolved. I then hammered the tip in to the brick and the tip bent.

I moved on to an old metal chair. I hammered the tip strait. Then thrust it in to the chair
denting the seat. The tip bent. I hammered the tip strait and continued. I moved my attention on to the chair hinge trying to cut through it. Finally there was a thumb size chip in the blade.

I continued pounding in to brick and wood with a 3-pound mallet. Still no major blade failure. I secured the tip back in the vise and bent the blade about 30 plus degrees many times. The blade still refused to break.

Back to more hammering and pounding. I hit the knife every with way top, side, back still the blade would not give.

I finally beat the back of the blade against the vise and the blade broke.

I moved on to the handle placing it in the vise and pounding on it breaking the last 2 inches of blade. No handle failure. I place the handle on a 2x4 and beat it with a 15 pound sledge. It had no affect on it. I was determined to destroy the handle but I was afraid to place it back in the vise and pound it in fear a breaking my vise.

I putt the handle on my 12-ton hydraulic press hoping to crush it. I pumped the hydraulic
Ram applying extreme force my best guess is about 10 tons. The press was under extreme
Tension. The handle looked crushed from the end however when I released the pressure
Is sprung back to shape. Pretty impressive considering I use the press to crush iron pipe with ease using only a small fraction of the force applied to the bushman handle.

I decided that I wasn’t going to be able to destroy the handle without tearing
up my shop equipment. I called the test finished.

Overall: The cold Steel Bushman is one tough and I mean tough knife.
It took 54 minutes of brutality to break it. Unreal; considering it only cost me $16.95 new. Check out the tip it is still intact. Awesome!

Note I didn’t perform any cutting test (paper, card board, ect.) as I was testing.
I can sill cut cardboard sawing thru it using the broken tip end section.
It is not on video; so don’t take my word for it.

On the Becker Bk9 and K-bar USMC I will performs cutting test throughout the video.

The video is in 5 10-minute parts. Part 6 is about 4 minutes.

Hope you enjoy the video? This one was tough !

I wish you'd test some of them Condor Knife & Tool machetes that cost so much !

I would like to test every knife I could get my hands on. Money is a factor.
I'm not rich. So my testing is limited to knives 100 dollars an under.

However I will ad these to my list. Maybe sooner or later I can move up to more
expensive knives.

Becker Bk9 and K-Bar USMC tests coming up.

The one knife brand I would like to shell out big bucks on is a STRIDER

There seems to be a lot of die hard fans (on Blade forums ) of this brand.

I have never owned one or used one. Most people say there is no wrong in this
brand. I would like to see once and for all, if this is true ?

I'm seriously considering going for broke on a Strider to test.

I just looked at the Strider web site I'm really interested now.

according to the FAQ on the Strider web site.

What is Strider’s warranty?
Per Mick Strider:

"If you break it, I'll be impressed. If I can’t fix it, I will replace it."

"We'll fix anything, but we won't fix anything for free."

"We Guarantee that your knife will perform. We don’t guarantee that it wont get wear marks from use."

"Function and Sharpness are free, like new frills cost."

It will be interesting to see if this is true ? If I can break it ?

Who will survive and what will be left of them ?

You rock man! I couldn't imagine the cheap bushman is this tough. I appreciate you tests on this one and Ka-Bar bowie. And I look forward to yours tests on USMC and strider. But I really doubt the strider can stand the torture as good as bushman.:D

Never lost faith in the CS Bushman.
Always thought it had a great price value to it.
Wonderful confirmation by your X-tream testing.
Now if only the sheath that came with it, would turn out to be just as tough! NOT!

any test where your applying pressure to a knife or anything that has sharp edges should probably be done with gloves on.

i cut a 1/4" deep gouge into my right index finger from the corner of a pair of leatherman kick pliars while pulling out a key. it bled a lot, and i was suprised having thought i was safe (since there was no knives/edges apperent). turns out the corners where the handles fit into the head of the pliers is sharp enough.

have a blade chip fly at you, it can do damage. have your hand fly at the blade, it can sever important peices  :(

not that i'm trying to be a nanny or anything, i've just messed up my hands as a result of not having gloves on several times...

Very interesting. I think most people underestimate how tough their knife is (as long as it is not made from a brittle stainless steel :) :) )

One comment that is made from a purely constructive standpoint is that some verbal commentary when doing the testing would be great. A common theme among the new genre of vid reviews is that the tester is silent, I am hoping this changes!!

From a comparative standpoint, where does the bushman fit in with other knives you have used, both in terms of cutting efficiency and durability.

For example, in the same or lower price range, how does it comapre to an old hickory butcher knife (or other flea market carbon steel blade) or a mora knife?

I'd agree. Even just something simple like "here we go" , "oops" or just anything would be better than nothing.

I love my bushman, but I will love it more after I reprofile it and make it a drop point.
I do wish you had put a staff on it and thrown it at things, as I intend to use mine as a spear head, but after that video I think it can handle anything.
Thanks man!

i dont care what anyone says buddy that was great! you used your knife, your time and your sweat to do something none of us would probably ever do. so if ya dont feel like talking thats alright with me. again that was great.

I'm glade you found the videos useful or entertaining. :D It was made for you and all blade forum users. If they like me or not.

I liked your destruction video. I especially liked it when you started getting tired of pounding on the bushman.

You should test more cheap knives, since that is what most people can afford.

The Glock bayonet knife is another cheap knife that comes to mind.

This big knife looks like a good deal

The Cold survival machete looks real solid:

I have one of these I have never beat on. Prbably never will as I have too many other knives.

The Bushman is one tough knife it wore me out.

I will do my best to test all knives. Cheap and expensive. I agree with you most people can only afford knives under the 100 dollar range. Me included.

The Glock Bayonet and cold steel machete is a great choice to test. I will add them to my list.

Thanks
