There was a red tag on the cold steel bushman I got that said not to store it in the sheath. Is the concern that the sheath will get moist and then make the blade moist? If I can't store it in its sheath what should I do, just leave it open laying on a table?

Also I've read baby oil is fine for oiling it but when I use the knife do I just leave the oil on it or wipe it off before using it? Also it has the black coating that I believe is anti-rust, do I still oil this black section of the blade?

Thank you for answering my amateur questions. I'm new to the world of survival/camp knives.

Indeed the only danger to storing a knife in the sheath is the containment of moisture. The bushman doesn't really cost much and with the coating on it it doesn't matter whether you store it in or out it's sheath.

If you are concerned about rust still, just leave the oil on all uncovered steel when you store if for a long time. Just wipe the oil off when you want to use it again.

You don't want to store it in a leather sheath because it will cause it to rust. Any other material is fine. To store it wipe it down with a silicon gun cloth, any oil that also acts as a rust preventative, or use a polishing paste like Flitz metal polish. I would not keep a bunch of oil on it when you use it.

Yep.

No reason to have it dripping.

Doesn't hurt.

It might not rust at all, oiled or not, in sheath or not. Depends on relative humidity.

A little rust won't hurt it anyway. It's an inexpensive brute tool, not a clean room scalpel.

Don't oil it, and store it in the sheath. It'll be fine. If you get any surface rust just take it off with steel wool. It won't kill it. If you want to oil it that'll help prevent rust, but it's not critical, and it doesn't take a lot to do the job. Just don't put it away wet and you'll usually be fine.
