I have one of these on order right now. I was very impresed with the mini-bushman I bought for my daughter as her new survival knife.

Does anyone know of an aftermarket sheath that fits the large Bushman? The sheath they come with is useless as far as I'm concerned.

I found a great black web sheath for the mini-bushman at a flea market but the guy didn't have anything that would fit the larger blade.

Also has anyone here ever found a good way to plug the handle of a bushman to make it a place to store survival items? On the mini bushman I took a BSA hot-Spark and wrapped it with braded Jute twine. This gets jammed in and wedged nicely in the handle, giving a ready source of fire and tinder.

I'm interested in anything you have ever done to the CS Bushman to make it a versatile survival knife. You can't beat the price, buying one was a no-brainer. Mac

Check out this thread. I can't find the other one that I remember, but someone went into detail about the contents and how they sealed the butt end up.

www.sheathmechanic.com has custom kydex sheaths for the bushman at a reasonable price.

I tried making my own piggyback sheath for my minibush and a SAK as my first try with kydex. Came out ok, if I say so myself, just need to get a tec lok for it.

edit to add: making ugly utilitarian kydex i found pretty easy, if there are no kydex cookers in your area.

you can block up the but end of these knives by drilling another hole opposite the prexisting lanyard hole, then cut @ an inch off the end of a 3/4" dowel rod ( i think it was 3/4 ) sand to fit then drill hole through plug and insert a lanyard.

Robert,

That's sort of what I did with the mini-bushman. I made up a short braded lanyard of Jute twine with the scraper on one end and the Hot Spark on the other. The Jute twine itself, when dry will catch the spark and actually produce a flame. Of course it is a pretty good string in it's own right.

I wrapped the handle of the knife with a rubber grip tape. This gave it a solid surface to take a paracord wrap on the handle. I found a decent nylon sheath and added a paracord leg tie. At the hole in the sheath I thread a small hook-eye to use when attaching the blade to a shaft. This works very well. All you have to do is mark where the hole falls on the shaft, poke the point in at that spot, replace the blade on the shaft and turn the hook eye in with a small stick for leverage.

I want to make the large Bushman into a primitive skills kit. I have a trip planned for when I get back to Brazil in January that will take me into a valley that is pretty much cut off from the rest of the world. It's this huge bowl of about 100 square kilometers that has no roads, jungle/cliffs/waterfalls in the bottom and scrub land on the sides. There are mountain lions and maned-wolves out there. I'm thinking the Bushman will be welcome.

I think the best use for the original sheath is to use it as a spear point cover when the knife is attached to a shaft. A spear made out of a bushman is no toy. Mac

LF,

A maned wolf looks like a red fox on steroids. Do a google image search for maned wolf and you'll see a photo. In Portuguese they are called "Lobo Guara" (accent over the last "a"). Some areas of Minas Gerais (my state) hve quite a few of them. They aren't aggressive normally but in some areas they are very used to humans and will come into campsites to steal food.

I'm planning to take a predator call with me this time to see if they can be called in like fox and coyote. I don't plan to hunt them because I don't want to end my life in a Brazilian prison. I would like to get some good photos though.

Roodog,

The photo dosen't convey the size of the Lobo Guara. They are very tall like a Collie and about the size of a German Shepherd. Mac

The stock bushman sheath is useless as a belt sheath, but it excels if one carries it over the shoulder in a crossdraw. I actually have abandoned my kydex sheath for it (which is a stellar belt sheath) in favor of the crossdraw carry. Just tie one end of a piece of paracord to the little hole above the belt slot, then tie the other end to the the bottom of the belt slot. Throw the loop over your head, stick one arm through and adjust for length of hang.

My CS Bushman and BK-7 arrived today in the mail. The Bushman was shipped with a nylon sheath that looks superior to the old leather ones, at least to me. It still looks too tight to accept the bushman after I give it a cord wrapped handle.

I love getting boxes in the mail.
