Cold Steel Bushman

Unfortunately, my opinion on the bushman's performance abilities rate quite low. Not at all because it's a bad knife, but because in cold weather like most high carbon knives the abilities are significantly decreased. I broke mine on a tree throwing it because the cold weather made it brittle. But other than that it performs reasonably for SK-5..

Really? Those frontiersmen must have had to carry a lot of steel with them to replace all the high carbon blades that broke because of cold weather:D. It was not the weather, it was a bad blade. For the most part the Bushman (especially the older models) holds up extremely well. The newer bowie model is not as well liked by those who have used the older models.

I have the regular Bushman and its one of my favourite knives

I sanded down the blade because the finish was worn off and quite ugly from heavy batoning. I also slipped a piece of bike tyre tube on the handle for better grip and insulation from the cold. Sometime in the future I'd like to replace the tube with grip tape though.

One of the best knives you can own for under $20. Tougher than nails, holds a good edge and fares pretty good in the kitchen

Certain types of trees can get hard as glass when frozen and will break any knife, even the unbreakable ones. When working in cold weather keep your knife or axe close to your body so it will stay warm.

Then don't throw your knife...

THG, have you ever seen the cold steel demonstration videos? Bushmans and Bowie Bushmans are used as throwers knives and spearheads. I used it as a spearhead and it didnt hold up. My fault for practicing my throwing......

Ah, "solid proof." Good point. Touché.

Edit: Ah, I thought you were talking about the POCKET Bushman...

The knives seems to generally rate highly for withstanding abuse, especially for the cost. I can't figure out how one is supposed to store stuff in the handle when there is no cap or lid to it. What does one do, stick a cork in it to hold your matches and fishhooks in?

I dont think you are suppose to store stuff in the handle. The handle was designed to be made from the same piece of metal as the blade to simplify it.

And, I know somebody who snapped a high end SOG Bowie throwing it. When you use a knife for something it was not intended for, there is a good chance that you may break it.

That said, the Bushman is a solid knife at a decent price. The leather sheaths that were included with the mini-Bushmans definetely are better than the non-leather sheathes that came with the bigger models. A rubber wrap on the handle would definetely be benficial.

They make an excellent kitchen knife. Sharpens up quick and easy,

Mine broke chopping on it's first sapling. I'll probably get another.

I used a mini-bushman for butchering one day, that smooth handle was slick but other than it is a great knife. And the handle is hollow so you can mount it on a pole as a spear, the lanyard hole becomes a hole for a securing screw or nail.
