Just go this piece yesterday. Luckily to have found one on the local second hand mktIs Carbon 5 steel a superior grade steeL?bruders out the

My piece comes in black epoxy powder coat finish?

Any out there know who to remove the black epoxy? Convert to satin?

Carbon V is an excellent steel. As knifenut1013 said paint stripper will remove the coating. Once you have the coating off the finish might be very rough so be ready to put in some elbow grease with sandpaper to get the desired finish.

Nice find! I have an old CS TM in "CarbonV" as well, I like the steel very much. Once you strip off the goop you can bring the steel up to as smooth a finish as you want. Just depends on how much elbow grease and sandpaper you're willing to use.

Cheers brus,

but I am kinda new in the elbow grease and sandpaper section.

Is there any particular sandpaper (model) I should use? Or any specific brand?

Cheers and thanks once gain

Getting into this kind of activity can lead to all sorts of mayhem. Don't say I didn't warn you.

Use automotive wet-or-dry sandpaper. Buy American. 3M brand is a good choice. Wrap the paper around a straight flat surface such as a file, and polish away.

I'm sure there's a link to an actual tutorial around http://beknivessite2.homestead.com/handrubbing.html somewhere...

I think the work will be worth it. The satin-finished Trailmasters, especially the stag-handled ones, were always so much nicer looking.

Different grits of the 3M sandpaper mentioned by Mr. Terrio above should get the ball rolling.

Thanks for the advice brus, manage to strip off all the black epoxy paint.

However, the blade sort of became not as sharp as it came in stock after removing the paint.

I am now using the kansky universal angle guided sharpener to re sharpen.
Back bevel. I am currently using the 25 degrees guide.
Is it more advisable to use 30 degree or 25?

Cheers brus
