at first i heard that carbon 5 was superour to sk 5. now it seems everyone says that sk 5 is better.what is the truth?

Depends. 0170-6C is basically 1095 on B-12, with a very good HT. SK-5 is basically Japanese (supposed to be) 1080. I have CS knives made with both steels. In my experience, the Carbon V will hold an edge a little longer, but the SK-5 can take alot more abuse. Also, for some reason, I can get an insanely sharp edge on the SK-5, but it doesn't last as long as the Carbon V. I have to say, though, I really love that SK-5.

While I like the Carbon V a little better (more experience with it), the SK-5 performs just fine. I did some informal testing of a CS Laredo doing snap cuts and chopping cuts while clearing yard waste, and also against a pell. My findings are similar to Troop's and I'm very happy with SK-5, especially with the price drop as compared to Carbon V.

SO FAR, I love the SK-5. Only time will tell. Both are excellent knife steels.
