I tried to search, but my computer keeps saying it can't do it!

I'd like to know a little about Carbon V, including, so I don't sound stupid(er) whether its Carbon Vee or Carbon 5 :foot:

Thanks all.

I think they call it Carbon V, but as been discussed many times before that's just a trade mark name so the actual steel can be anything.

Carbon V is a good cutlery grade high carbon steel. It takes a great edge and usually keeps it long enough for most chores. Blades made from it require more care/maintenance that those made from stainless steels, but that care/maintenance is pretty easy.

It's carbon steel but the actual steel used changes from time to time depending on availability, pricing and so on. The knives are made by Camillus so the steels are American made. So if American carbon steel is good enough for you, that's the answer. Take care.

Thanks for the answers. I can always count on this place for the info.

I understood it to be a 50100B which has carbon, manganese and chrome as the alloying elements.

It is widely thought that the current Carbon V is 50100-B, also known as 0170-6. This is a high quality chrome, vanadium non-stainless steel.

V and 5 is actually the same, the V stands for the Roman no. 5

nymikel64,

I know 'V' is in Latin a number five, but I thought 'V' could stay for 'Vanadium', because Carbon V has a small amount of vanadium.

Are you sure that 'V' is for '5'?

Franco

Hi Franco, it`s what I always thought, why should they use two different names for the same steel. if they call it carbon 5, I am pretty sure the V stands for a 5.

The carbon v seems to close to 1095 high carbon in use,it will rust pretty easy and seems about the same hardness.
