any thoughts on the desperado?never handled one but like the blade.what about that handle?im thinking about picking one up should i?

Well, it's a full tang 420 knife that's good if you're expecting trouble. Legally, you'll have less trouble with the Vaquero -- plus the Vaquero has a much better blade. All depends what you want it for.

i am a marshal in atl. specializing in warrant service.i carry a fixed blade in the appendix position as a handgun retention device.the desperado looks promising, lot of blade and less grip.how does it handle.ive tried to find one locally but no luck

Oh, in that case, it might be just what you're looking for. If you order one of Cold Steel's videos, they go over the uses of the Desperado. I got mine for about $35 on eBay and it's the type of knife I'd carry with a handgun while camping, using rest stops and so forth. I'd hate to try to take one away from someone because that small grip would make it very difficult.

Just keep in mind that this thing is more of a weapon and there are probably few practical uses for it. The blade design and the serrations make it a formidable "tool" to have around.

thanks, i carry my supertool when i need utility.this is strictly for retaining control of my weapon or breaking a rear choke etc....gettin home safe as it were.thanks for the help

tried a safekeeper but could never get it to ride right.i use a length of paracord thru the lash hole then looped around my inner belt.that way i clear my body before the sheath disengages the blade.for some reason the safe keeper would not ride like i wanted.too straight up and down i guess.need that knife curve to get the angle right on my body i guess.thanks for the reply

I have a Desparado, and found it can be lashed over the double mag pouch on my cross-draw shoulder rig: if I am going to swap mags out, and trouble tries to get close and personal, I can use it to return the favor. The weapon retention qualities are outstanding for the Desperado with its small, "egg" shaped grips, and you can see that the curviture of the knife makes it point foward, so it is almost like a push dagger in utilization. But unike a push dagger, it is not illegal.( push daggers are considered "dirk or dagger" under Calif. law and are therefor felonious) It is not as good for utilitarian purposes, but my brother once gutted a big Mojave green rattlesnake with mine, so it can do other tasks in a pinch.

I have one of these from long time ago, I changed the handle from the kraton to a more flatter micarta handle, it is still egg shape but a better fit in my hand, also does not "grip" my shirts like the kraton when carried IWB. The closest thing to this knife would be the Ka-Bar TDI range, except that they have shorter blades. I should imagine the carry and use would be the same. Perhaps the TDI would be more comfortable to carry over long periods. Anyway its fun to try and learn......

i bought into the tdi thing and tried it for awhile.very uncomfortable in iwb carry and in actual striking tests on cutting dummy the knife would twist out of my grip almost.the newer large models are alot better.thicker at the grip and crossection and the longer blade stabilises the knife better. i really appreciate the input.i guess ill have to order one and test it based on good reviews.

glockdad40cal. I have carried and recommended it to some of my fellow friends and students in the law enforcement community. It will work great for the way you plan on using it. A cheap l.e.o. insurance policy indeed. Take care and be safe brother.

I've never heard of that gang...must be new.

got my desperado and after a little trimming on the sheath to allow a full grip i am pleased.cuts well on my dummy and passes the dropped paper test.this is where i drop a piece of paper while drawing into a thrust and a slash.it speared the paper about 3 inches deep and completely cleaved the floating paper on the slash.i then put 550 thru the top lashole stuck it into my uniform pants and carried it on duty.the fat handle and angle of grip to blade made it very comfy and an easy fast draw from behind my gunbelt.thanks guys for the help.any further ideas will also be appreciated

have you looked at Front Sight's HAK (HideAway Knife)? i use one that is fit for me when i wear Hatch gloves. it is fast, secure and there is no need to drop the HAK as it can be used (and stays out of the way for the most part) when grappling, shooting my sidearms or long gun, and there is no fear that a bad guy can pick up your knife when you have had to drop it to transition to hands on or to your firearm.

link to the HAK. check out the site. i have three HAKs and one more on order... that's how much i like this product!

A Mojave Green is a type of rattlesnake that inhabits the high desert regions of California, and, I belive, parts of Arizona. Most rattlers have a hemotoxin(blood poison), some have a rare neurotoxin( nervous system poison) A good number of these Greens have both. Nasty critters!

I had a cityslicker friend who went up in the mountains and spotted a rattler in a woodpile next to where he was staying. He couldn't rest 'til he'd taken that pile down, found the snake and killed it. "What I didn't know about where all the others I didn't see, but were just as close," he told me.

Water snakes scare me the most. They surely do!

Hey Glockdad....

Sounds like you need better sheaths...

When you do,, come and see me...
