I bought "el hombre" for about 40$cdn and am surprised in performance of this knife. I use it everyday in the kitchen, around the house and at work cutting boxes and all kinds of garbage. It is a great knife, with great lockup, blade size and shape, and the steel is pretty good, takes shaving sharp edge and is easy to sharpen:) I think it is also a good self defense choice :barf:

ps. much better than many more expensive knives, considering the abuse and work i put it through:thumbup:

I've got one in 4-inch that I like a great deal, though I haven't actually used it. Cold Steel represents an overall good quality for a good price, but some of their recent steels are junk. AUS8A and VG-1 are good, but 4116 Krupp is a good drug store steel, twelve for a dollar kind of knife.

I've got a plain edge El Hombre and I love it too. It's a great worker and I like how the recurve cuts. The steel holds an edge ok and touches up real easy. Whenever I need to cut up a box, this is the knife I use.

The edge is a little thick and a little obtuse for my taste though (on mine at least). I have to reprofile it sometime.

I wish I could get a Vaquero Grande in plain edge. I like the plain edge El Hombre I got, but it hasn't seen enough use. So many knives, so little time. :)

I can't see much use with a plain blade Vaquero, but I suppose it's a matter of choice. I also have a Voyager with a 4-inch blade and I consider it the better knife; still, I have both, not only in 4-inch, but in 6-inch. My friends say the Vaquero is easily the most intimidating.

I have a few of the vaqueros in XL and grand love the knife but I hone the serrations off. Just use the edge of a coarse aluminum oxide.
