I just wanted to give some of my impressions of this knife. I've been carrying mine for 2 days now, and I must say it is very convenient. It's hard to believe there is a 4" blade in the handle. First of all I will start with the handle. the is very slim and ergonomic. It has an almost serpentine-like beauty to it. It fills the hand, but not to much. I must add, I have medium size hands. The pocket clip is set up for tip up carry. The clip is longer than the one that comes on the voyager series. I find it easier to clip this knife in the pocket than the voyagers that have extreemly stiff clips. The pivot point rivet is definately oversized on this knife. I feel this is important when thinking about strength. The knife is a lockback. I like this design more than linerlocks for a Self Defense/Utility knife. I recieved the Cold Steel "Proof" video with the knife, and the lock was definately run through its paces in the tests that were performed. Also, because it has a lockback teamed up with dual thumbstuds, it is almost perfectly ambidextrous. A reversable clip would finish the job. The 4" Nogales clip point blade on this knife is definately intimidating. It is made out of AUS-8a, which in my experience, has been a good steel. Good edge retention/rust resistance. My knife is fully serrated. I find CS serrations to be very agressive, and aren't to hard to sharpen. The recurve of this blade is very nice. If you are using a pull cut, the blade will really come into its own. I know that CS makes a plain edge version of this knife, but for self defense I like serrations. In conclusion, the El Hombre is a cool little package. It conceals well, is very light and would definately fill the role of the everyday Defense/Utility/Tactical knife. For the price, it's a worthwhile investment.

I'm surprised by your characterization of the handles as "slim and ergonomic". I found it somewhat ergonomic, but definitely not slim. In fact, despite the fact that I liked the knife, the thickness of the handle is what took the El Hombre out of my carry rotation. It was like carrying an-endura-and-a-half! However, I have a very old model, and I remember the line getting re-vamped. Perhaps they are thinner now, I'll have to check out a new one!

I found the edge on my original too thick, but once thinned down, the El Hombre gave typical recurved-blade performance. By which I mean, it would slice like you wouldn't believe. The very tip was very sharp, and the knife would penetrate very easily for the first 1/4" or so. After that the blade widened quickly and penetration wasn't as good.

If the handles really are slimmer now, it's an interesting choice, and certainly a whole lot different than the standard folder fare!

I had a plain edge El Hombre and I liked it a lot also.Felt good in the hand sliced like a hawkbill(almost) but had a usefull point.I recently "thinned out" my knives and the El Hombre went to a new home.Changed my mind about 10 times, but I wanted to get down to a few knives that suited my needs.

I have been thinking about getting a couple of the El Lobos(3 inch)and putting them away for my daughters, for I feel the design is a great one for defense.

I've got a fairly old series Hombre as well - and it falls into the "thick handle" category by far. It is comfortable tho.

You definitely need to thin the edge on the plain edge version - I actually would have preferred the serrated now.

I don't actually carry it that much - I prefer the thinness and lightness of my Spyderco Endura. So all in all - nice knife, but now it's my beater.

I have one of the Hombres and a Lobo. I agree they are decent knives for the money. For defense the blade is hard to beat. Wicked point and the recurve blade will cut you three ways... Long, deep and continuously. The newer versions have the steel clip and I agree with the original view that it is an easy way to carry a long bladed knife.

If anyone is interested I have one of each of these knives for sale. If interested just drop me a line.

$35 for the Hombre.
$32 for the Lobo.
$38 for a Desperado.
