I've seen these in the catalogs, and according to the company, there is nothing wrong with the knives besides a minor defect in finish, or the profile being off 1/16". I've been tempted to buy some of these less expensive versions of their knives, but I was just wondering if anybody else has owned one. If so, was there anything wrong with the knife from what you could see? Thanks ahead for any info.

I have a Cold Steel Master Hunter "second" & except for the number 2 branded on the butt of the handle, you would never know it was not a "first".

Hope this helps.

I got a CS tanto second and it was some time before I noticed a tiny smudge in the horizontal grind line. These are best deals.

Depending on the price these are good to great deals. I've got 2 Trailmasters, 2 Master Hunters and a big bad khukri and I certainly can't see anything wrong with them. If you are buying to use, this is defintely the way to go.

I will always buy the seconds before the firsts. I use em hard, and I cannot tell what the heck made them throw these knives into the seconds pile.

Buy them with confidence, then come back here and tell us if you found the defect.

I have a Recon Scout and Recon Tanto. The Scout, if you look at the edge by the pommel, it is not exactly centered. It is off, but not by much.

The Tanto looks as if it has a flat spot on the edge by the handle, but a couple of sharpenings should remove all evidence of that.

That's all I could find, but I'm also not a knife maker, so maybe there's more. I really abuse these 2 knives, there's certainly nothing wrong with their edge holding, strength, or toughness!

I love 'em!

I'm probably going to be getting a couple of the 2nds in the near future, namely the Recon Scout,Bush Ranger, or another SRK.Probably just get the latter two since I can get them both for the price of one Recon Scout. Seems like they're certainly worth the money. I'll let you guys know what I think when I actually get them. Also, just curious, has anyone actually tried the new knives using the 420 Sub Zero Quenched(UGH!)? I'm kind of curious what type of performance they're capable of.

where do you get these factory seconds? id like to get me a second trailmaster bowie.... tell tell

I think the factory seconds are only available from Cold Steel. I may be wrong, but hopefully someone else would know for sure. Just get one of their catalogs and check it out.

I got a Light Kukhri (#2) and the black coating had very small "dabs" of extra black coating here and there. You could hardly see it and I use the knife often, and its one wicked cutter.

I have a Cold Steel "2nd" Gurkha Kukri that I received in a trade, and for the life of me, I CANNOT find why it was stamped "2" at the end of the handle.

Well, everyone seems to be dancing around it, so here goes:

for credit card orders: 800.255.4716
for international orders: 805.650.8481

Enjoy. I want one of them Kukri things, too!

I have a ton of CS items and quite a few are seconds (maybe 5 or 6). I can't find the blems on any of them except a safe keeper dagger that the grind is off-center on and a light kuk that has the same "spotting" of the coating mentioned above. I have a Trailmaster (coated), a Bush Ranger and a few others that are all great knives. I will also relate this tale... I have a Gurkha Kukri that is a second. It is a replacement. The first one I bought broke in half right above the handle (maybe 1") and had rusting from what looked to be a hairline (and I do mean hairline...it was invisible to the naked eye) fracture. It cracked chopping a 1" pine limb!! I had also attempted to blue the blade previously (did not take very well so I assume Carbon V is just stainless enough....!!). CS states that their seconds sales are final and there is no warranty but they also state that the blems are all cosmetic and not structural. It also mentions that blueing can void warranty on all items. Anyway, I wrote a letter stating what had happened, explaining what I thought the problem was and telling them up front about the blueing and my awareness of their warranty policy concerning these issues and sent it to CS along with the broken knife... I figured I had nothing to lose. I forgot about it until about a week and a half later a brand new (2nd, of course) kuk shows up on my doorstep. I was pleasantly surprised. I've beat the hell out of this one and it's still holding strong. Even though they didn't have to do anything, they were wrong and they made it right, no questions asked. I was impressed.
As far as the new 420 stuff by CS... I have a Black Bear Classic copy on the way that I plan to put through the ringer just to see how the steel holds up. I'm tired of all the talk so I want some Cliff Stamp results!!

I have a few United knives that are 420 but have never really used them. I can get them EXTREMELY sharp but I don't know how long they will stay that way... I plan to do some chopping and such with the Black Bear just to see how bad that stuff really is.... I probably won't bust concrete with it or anything but do the usual stuff I would do with my other CS or Becker knives. I will keep everyone posted.

CS stopped sending me the catalogue for Special Projects, damn it! I wanted to buy a couple of the steel ferrules for walking sticks, and someday spring for the short Culloden 2nd.

In reading this thread, it just occurred to me that I've not heard of any other manufacturer selling their seconds the way CS does. Does that mean that Lynn Thompson is just particularly thrifty, or do the other companies just go ahead and sell them, and suffer some criticism for QC? Seems to me that might explain a lot about a couple well-known, popular companies who can remain anonymous this time.

Anybody know anything about this business of the 2nds?

About once a year Spyderco sells seconds at their factory store, usually a one or two day event. As with CS it's hard to tell why they are marked as seconds. Spyderco files/cuts a small notch on the top of the blade near the pivot so they are easy to spot on the secondary market.
