Cold Steel Finn Bear Edge Problem?

Last week after doing some research on the forums here I placed an order for a Cold Steel Finn Bear as I wanted a cheap durable hiking knife.

The knife arrived today and I was looking at the edge and I noticed that on the right side it drops off completely towards the handle end of the blade (sorry I don't know the technical terms). However, the other side has an even edge from the tip to handle. I was wondering if this was normal and if not then how I can correct it.

It cuts fine through paper but has more of a problem at the handle end. I had credit so I ended up paying $6.50 shipped for this knife so I won't be sending it back as I know it is a cheaper knife. I just want to fix it honestly.

I have a Lansky Deluxe sharpening system on the way and I think I can use that to fix it if the problem turns out to not be normal. I don't know if you can tell from the pictures so let me know if I didn't describe it well and I can try again.

The first is the side the unaffected left side and the second is the right side that appears off.

Maintenance, Tinkering & Embellishment subforum would be better for you to get expert's advices

IMHO.... looks like uneven grind with different angle, it would be a error but not too serious
It might work if you are left-handed, but left side still need to be fixed at the beginning

If I took this....in general
1. rest(ungrinded) part of the left side
2. whole part of the right side
3. remove burl and trim for even
(Just 1, if width of V-edge grind is not uneven)

Maybe it's not too hard if you have diamond rough stone of Lansky
And 4116 is not so hard steel

Good luck, and sorry if something was wrong with me

Thank you very much for the advice. I am right handed so I guess it will be an issue? Should I still reprofile it like you said? Also, I ordered the deluxe kit instead of diamond so will that be a problem? Sorry for all of the questions i am still very new to this.

Is there a way to move this thread to the other subsection like you suggested or should I start a new thread?

It looks like the bevels are off. I can't tell about the angles, but it certainly has more bevel showing on the left side of the blade.

If it was my knife, depending on the time I had, I'd even out the bevels on both sides with my sharpener. They don't need to be the same width across the blade (the Lansky seems to work this way), but they should be very close from side to side. I'd also tape the edge with some painters tape then get one of those small round or elliptical files and carefully put a spanish notch where the ricasso meets the edge. These two things would dress up the edge so I wouldn't be embarassed to show it to someone.

Lansky sells each type of sharpening hones to add or replace. I think mount would be stable, but don't think Diamond System is essential.

If your edge is like this figure of the post, centered with same angle, it will be no problem I think.
If it is not like this extremely I would correct, but in your case it might be done in "use, dull, then sharpen" cycle.

I think this is a standard and secure method to fix your ungrinded part/side of the edge.
I have DMT Diafold FWFC but I cannot recommend it more than above.

Sorry I don't know that exactly. Moderators sometimes move them.

just use the knife and when it gets dull just resharpen it and even out the edge. it must have been either a monday morning or friday afternoon 2 minutes before work lets out when they sharpened that knife :D

if you need a post moved or need to report a post click the black triangle at the bottom of your post or the post you want to report and type in the message.
i asked a mod to move this thread to mt&e

Haha that is probably true. I bought it to use as a cheap user on hiking/camping trips so I wouldn't have to worry if it got damaged or I lost it. I will just follow your advice and use it until it becomes dull and resharpen the edge. Like I stated earlier in my first post, I did send an email to CS customer service to see what they would say but as expected they wanted me to ship it to them for evaluation which will take 5 weeks or something like that. With it being such a cheap knife and still cutting just fine I don't think I will send it in. Thank you all for the advice and thank you Richard for letting me know how to use the black triangle.
