Cold steel folders... Hmmm

I was cleaning out an old drawer a few weeks ago and I came upon an old cs folder. If I remember right, I bought it back in the early '80,s. I believe it was the first production run of the knife. It says- Cold Steel SAN MAi with 3 horizontal squiggly lines after MAi. On the other side it says- Ventura, Calif Made in Japan. It has a nylon sheath that is worn horizontally on your belt. The blade is a tanto point.

I believe I got it in a trade at a gun show from a knife dealer. It looks brand new. I don't think it has ever been sharpened. Is this a good quality knife or just a average edc?

Sounds like a Shinobu, they came in 2 or 3 different sizes with a fully covered Kraton handle. I still own one I bought in the 80's, at the time they were a high priced folder, Kraton, Tanto Point and San Mai 3 being cutting edge for folders. As a user they were quickly superceded by Spyderco, Benchmade, Kershaw etc.

Yep I have one. Had a smaller one I got in Illinois in the 80s also but sold it a while back. I rather like the bigger model and felt even back then it was well advanced compared to most of the other knives available. I was buying Cold Steel in the late 70s before any of the other companies I now support also came into play. Some of the earlier stuff from CS was crap but some of it was quite good. The Shinobu folder was a good one.
