Cold Steel folders vs. Benchmade...

Wow this is not even a legitimate question. Cold Steels folders are not in the same boat as Benchmades. Both have their legitimate uses and following but Benchmade folders out rank Cold Steels like a train out ranks a Volkswagen in towing capacity.

That said Cold Steel folders are decent and some are even cool (the Vasquero). I think folder wise you would be better off buying a CRKT or Kershaw in that price range though. Just IMO.

hey...this is out of topic but i'm having trouble accessing newgraham.com...i was planning to place an order but can't seem to access it...it's weird...it's like there's a force working against me buying knives...it's the only website that i can't get into...

i have more than 100 sites in my favourites and newgraham is the only one i can't get into...bloody weird...

I agree, cold steel isn't really in the same league.

And would also agree that you would get more for your money by purchasing a CRKT M-16, a Spyderco Delica/Endura/Native, or a Benchmade Griptillian than anything cold steel has to offer. Just my opinion though.

I own a bunch of both and for general use I think the CS is a better knife just cause you won't be afraid to actually use it. As for fit and finish well BM has it all over CS. Sharpenability and cutting efficiency CS has it hands down. I particularly like the Pro LIte of the CS line. Extremely heavy duty, very good fit and finish and just about an infallible liner lock. These are heavy duty folders. They use 440A with cryo treatment so the edge holding and toughness seems to be very good. Not as handsome as BM's in general, but very user friendly. CS also has a similar liner locking model to the Pro Lite only using carbon V for the steel. I am definetly going to get one of those in the near future. Hope all this helps. Keep'em sharp

I like the X2 Voyagers for their size, but they're not put together very well from my personal experience. The blade on my X2 has a couple spots where the edge of the blade folded over from closing on the frame n'lock. They need to redesign their Voyagers.

How can you guys even draw a comparison between these two brands of folders.

I happen to a big fan of both and feel that in their respective price ranges they are the best, if not the best.

Cold Steel Voyagers offer great bang for the buck.

If Cold Steel is an Escort and Benchmade is a BMW, then there are tons of popular folders that are Aprilla Scooters.

For a quality Zytel/FRN folder they're hard to beat.

Perfect analogy!

It sure is a perfect analogy. Ford Escort does everything it's supposed to. That is, get you where you're goin'. BMW does the same thing for a whole lot more money and very little more in the way of *practical* function. Comfort, luxury, prestige, sure. Take'em both cross country and the BMW might get you there a few hours earlier (provided the BMW doesn't break down someplace where you have to wait as couple of days for a $1000 part). If you just want to cut something, the CS will work more than just fine.

Benchmade is far superior in all aspects! The car analogy works well.

However, Cold Steel makes some nice, cheap folders. Nothing wrong with that.

One brand I will NEVER own, and the other I own several of their models.

The one brand I own, is made in Oregon.

There is no comparison at all, IMHO.

Enough said.

:)

I would have bet every cent I have(which isn't a bunch) that Sticky would have posted on this one. hehehehehe:D :D dtsoll
BTW I agree with ya Sticky!

What's with all the CS bashing ... am I missing something?

Owned almost all of the Benchmades at one time or another. Their edges out of the box have come either hair popping sharp, to just plain dull.

Just my personal experience:

*All bought from retailers.

  • AFCK - Sharp
  • Ascent - Ok
  • Big Spender - Sharp
  • Dark Star - Sharp, once it went dull could not restore the edge no matter how long I tried with the lansky.
  • Griptillian - Hair Popping Sharp
  • 710 Axis - Ok
  • Osborne - BM940 Came Dull as a butter Knife the it's Red Handled black bladed sister came Hair Popping Sharp??
  • Pardue 350 - Hair Popping
  • Striker - Sharp

All this equals, that BM still needs to work on their Edge QC.

Every time I have picked up a CS Plain Edge "Anything" it has always tried to raise the flesh off my arm when I tried to shave with it. Might be their QC, but IMHO they come out of the box with a better edge. Ugly as hell though. They need to work BIG time on their handles.

They're both the best in their respect price ranges. I wouldn't buy an unserrated Cold Steel in AUS-8, though.

Unless you're addicted to the Axis lock and M2 steel (which is the best set of addictions to have, just so you know), get some Spyderco knives instead. They constantly improve the materials they use while keeping their prices near Cold Steel's level.
